The Dangerous ‘Settlers Storming Al Aqsa’ Fiction

Throughout 2023, Arab media has promoted fake news that Jews are taking over the third holiest site in Islam, the al Aqsa Mosque. They are doing it to incite 1.8 billion Muslims around the world to call for a jihad against the Jews and to destroy Israel.

And it’s a total fiction that is not repudiated by any media and government, even knowing that it is not just false but designed to set the Middle East on fire.

The incitement happens in regular media as well as social media.

Wafa, the official media of the Palestinian Authority wrote on September 10 that “Dozens of settlers break into Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque.” It claimed that the Jews “conducted provocative tours through the courtyards of the mosque, received explanations about the alleged ‘Jewish Temple,’ and performed Talmudic rituals near the Dome of the Rock.” As seen in pictures, all the Jews did was walk around the site during normal visiting hours.

It is part of a string of highly charged lies repeated around the Arab and Muslim world.

The list goes on, falsely stating that Jews walking around the Temple Mount were in any way entering, let alone harming, the Al Aqsa Mosque.

Social media did much the same over the summer, showing Jews – many of them elderly – walking around the courtyard. However, the text to its readership was “Israeli settlers raided Al-Aqsa” and “Colonial Israeli settlers break into Jerusalem’s Al Aqsa courtyards.”

There are many highly visible examples of Muslim and Arab media and governments deliberately lying to the masses to stoke a religious holy war against the Jews and Jewish State. Yet the United Nations, U.S. government, mainstream and social media companies have never said a word to stop the hateful propaganda which has cost thousands of lives.

News departments around the world are at the smallest levels, as the Internet destroyed the business model many years ago. Due to that reality, media outlets use the same source information and then craft it in a manner that fits the biases of its management team and readership.

The range of headlines that can emerge from a single story in a highly charged environment like the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is almost too remarkable to believe. Consider a story from August 17, 2023:

The plain facts are that the Israeli Defense Forces entered Jenin to arrest two people. As they encircled a building to arrest two wanted men, Palestinians fired on the troops who returned fire. A 32-year old Palestinian Arab named Mustafa al-Kastouni died of his wounds. He was a member of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, a U.S. designated foreign terrorist organization.

Here’s how different media showcased the story online:

  • “Israeli forces kill Palestinian youth during Jenin raid,” wrote the official Palestinian news media Wafa, describing a 32 year old as a child. He was killed by “Israel forces” making the dynamic a David vs. Goliath scenario.
  • “Palestinian youth shot dead by zionist forces in Jenin,” read the Turkish ILKHA, repeating the lie that the Palestinian was a child and using inflammatory language that dismisses Israel as a country.
  • “Martyr, injuries from IOF fire during Jenin raid,” was the headline from Al Mayadeen, a Lebanese-based media group, that opted to sanctify the Palestinian gunman.
  • “Israel blows up Jenin bakery to assassinate resistance fighter,” was the most inflammatory headline cooked up by an online news site The Cradle, where anyone can contribute.
  • “Another Israeli raid on occupied West Bank’s Jenin kills one Palestinian,” from The New Arab also added inflammatory language in the headline to make the event part of a broader story of Israelis constantly invading Palestinian territory.
  • “One fatally shot during Israeli Occupation raid on Jenin,” from Jordan’s RoyaNews did not identify the dead man as a Palestinian Arab which was implied by the Israeli raid.
  • “Israeli forces kill Palestinian during Jenin raid” was the Middle East Eye headline, giving neither age nor status as to whether the man was armed.
  • “Israeli forces kill Palestinian during Jenin arrest raid,” from al Quds, an independent Palestinian-British site, was similar.
  • “Israeli forces fatally shoot Palestinian man in Jenin raid,” from Iranian PressTV also followed the most common fomat.
  • “Israel forces kill Palestinian in Jenin,” was the short headline from Middle East Monitor, was similar to Middle East Eye but dropped mentioning the raid.
  • “Israeli raid on Jenin kills Palestinian,” was the curt headline from ArabNews.
  • “Palestinian Killed in Exchange of Fire With Israeli Military in Jenin, Palestinian Health Ministry Says,” read the left-wing Israeli Haaretz headline, which added that there was an exchange of fire.
  • “Israeli troops kill a Palestinian militant in a gunbattle outside a West Bank bakery,” wrote ABCNews, in a bizarre highlight of the bakery on the ground floor of the building where the shooting took place.
  • “Israel raid kills West Bank militant, wounds health worker: Palestinians,” wrote France24, saying that the Palestinian killed was a militant in the West Bank.
  • “West Bank: a member of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades killed in Jenin,” was the headline from Italy’s AgenziaNova, which uniquely highlighted the terrorist group affiliation of the Palestinian man.
  • “Palestinian gunman killed, terror cell arrested by Israeli forces in Jenin,” wrote The Times of Israel, marking the incident as between armed groups.
  • “An Israeli Raid on Jenin, a West Bank Militant Stronghold, Kills 1, Palestinians Say” was the Newsmax headline, which emphasized that Palestinian militants control Jenin.
  • “Palestinian Terrorist Killed as IDF Engages in Heavy Clashes in Jenin,” was the headline from Hamodia, a Jewish publication, labeling the Palestinian man as a terrorist.
  • “Clashes erupt in West Bank’s Jenin, one Palestinian terrorist killed,” from Israel’s i24News highlights that a terrorist was killed but doesn’t attribute the source of the fire from Israeli troops.

Such is the biased coverage from pro-Palestinian to pro-Israeli in the Middle East and European media. It demonstrates how news today is a crafted editorial to lead a reader to particular conclusions.

Some additional takeaways from this reporting is that Palestinian news lies openly and Israel’s left-wing Haaretz reporting mirrors that from Arab countries, while the right-wing US site Newsmax aligns its stories with Israeli and Jewish news sites.

Reading a single source of news about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict will inevitably leave a reader with a highly skewed view of any story, and if that source is the official news of the Palestinian Authority, with complete fabrications, commonly called #FakeNews.

Hussein Khaled Qaraqe, a 31 year old Palestinian Arab, rammed his car into a crowd of Israeli Jews on the eve of the Jewish Sabbath in the Jews’ holiest city of Jerusalem on February 10, 2023. He killed a six year old and a 20 year old man who had just gotten married, and injured several others.

While the world was outraged and strongly condemned the attack, including the United States which issued a statement that the “deliberate targeting of innocent civilians is repugnant and unconscionable,” Palestinians celebrated and defended the killings of Jewish civilians.

Hamas, the popular political-terrorist group which governs Gaza and holds a majority of Palestinian parliament, issued a statement under the banner “Hamas mourns Palestinian killed by Israeli occupation troops in occupied Jerusalem.” The article wrote “The Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas mourns Palestinian resistance fighter Hussein Qaraqe’, 31, who was killed by the Israeli occupation forces near the colonial settlement of ‘Ramat’ in occupied Jerusalem on Friday. Hamas reiterates that the Palestinian people will continue to resist the Israeli occupation forces and colonial settlers’ crimes against the defenseless citizens of the occupied West Bank and the racist policy of home demolition.”

Wafa, the official website of the Palestinian Authority under the leadership of Fatah, ran a story inverting the facts with the headline “Israeli settlers kill a Palestinian driver in occupied Jerusalem.” The article wrote “A Palestinian young man was shot dead today by Israeli settlers at Nabi Samuel junction in occupied Jerusalem, according to local sources. The family of Hussein Khaled Qaraqe, 30, said Israeli settlers opened gunfire at their son while he was driving his vehicle at the junction, critically injuring him. The young man was pronounced dead a few of minutes later.”

Ground News captured the overall Palestinian sentiment of the attack “Palestinians Celebrate Murder of Israelis in Terrorist Attack, Media Headlines Call Victims ‘Settlers’“

Palestinian sites featured pictures of the killer but not the Jewish victims

Outside of the Palestinians, several Muslim sites sought to inflame the situation.

Palm Strategic Initiatives wrote “Two Israeli settlers were reported killed and five others injured during a ramming attack in occupied Jerusalem. Israeli media reported that Palestinian youth Hussein Qaraqe’, 31, carried out a run-over attack in Ramout Israeli settlement in occupied Jerusalem.” Neither the six year Jewish victim nor the 20-year old was described in any fashion, while the 31-year old terrorist was described as a “youth.”

Al Mayadeen wrote that “Israeli media claim two illegal Israeli settlers were killed and five others were injured in a ramming operation into a bus stop in Al-Quds,” making Jewish civilians walking on the street the actual perpetrator of doing something “illegal.”

Hezbollah’s Al Manar wrote “Car Ramming Attack in Al-Quds City Kills Two Zionist Settlers, Critically Injures Seven Others.” The article led “A car ramming attack, carried out by a Palestinian who descends from Al-Issawiya town, left two Zionist settlers dead and critically injured seven others in Al-Quds City. Hussein Karaka, 31, rammed into a bus stop at the entrance to the Ramot neighborhood and hit 11 settlers, according to media reports.”

The left-wing Israeli media headed by Haaretz tried to explain away the terrorism. It ran a headline “Jerusalem Attacker Was Released From Psychiatric Ward Day Before Car Ramming, Family Says.” It pushed the narrative that the Palestinian terrorist was not really a perpetrator of violence as much as a victim of mental illness.

What has happened to the world?

It is illegal under international law to incite violence which the Palestinian leadership does openly. It is also illegal to finance terrorism, which the global community does in providing funds to the PA and Hamas.

It should perhaps not be shocking in this environment that a member of Congress normalized a genocidal jihadist regime, but shouldn’t we be appalled that Jews are defending this Congresswoman?

The killing of civilians is absolutely “repugnant and unconscionable,” and it is past time to hold the defenders of such atrocities to account.

The too familiar routine of a Palestinian Arab viciously attacking a Jewish civilian unfolded again. An Arab repeatedly stabbed a Jewish civilian, and then another Jewish civilian witnessed the crime and shot the terrorist.

The sequence is straightforward. The perpetrator and victim are clear.

But only if you see the actions through the lens of coexistence, as most Israelis and the western world perceive.

For Palestinian Arabs and their sympathizers, Jews have no right to even be next to the Arab. The basic presence of Jews was the offense, and therefore the Arab is the actual victim twice over – first having to live with Jews, and then to be shot by those same “settlers.”

Palestinian media covered the event with the header “Israeli settler shoots Palestinian in Jerusalem,” making the incident appear as an unprovoked Israeli attack on Arabs, absolution via inversion.

The Jerusalem Post headline was the opposite: “Jerusalem stabbing attack: 41-year-old in moderate condition.” The audience readily understood that the terrorist was an Arab who attacked a Jewish civilian.

The Jerusalem Post article continued with “Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem said the stabbing was ‘a natural response to the occupation’s crimes against our Islamic and Christian sanctities in the city of Jerusalem. This act of resistance confirms once again the failure of all attempts to stop the escalation of the act of resistance in the occupied West Bank and the city of Jerusalem,’ he said.“

While Israelis attempt to live lives of coexistence, Palestinian Arabs believe that Jews have no history or rights to live in the land, especially in Jerusalem. The Arab street, political parties and media openly support violence to “resist” the presence of Jews.

The nature of the conflict is clear: an Israeli vision of coexistence compared to an Arab vision of a Jew-free land.
