Hamas Charter, Articles 9 and 10

The Hamas Charter‘s second section is about “objectives,” captured in Articles Nine and Ten.

Objectives

Incentives and Objectives:

Article Nine:

The Islamic Resistance Movement found itself at a time when Islam has disappeared from life. Thus rules shook, concepts were upset, values changed and evil people took control, oppression and darkness prevailed, cowards became like tigers: homelands were usurped, people were scattered and were caused to wander all over the world, the state of justice disappeared and the state of falsehood replaced it. Nothing remained in its right place. Thus, when Islam is absent from the arena, everything changes. From this state of affairs the incentives are drawn.

As for the objectives: They are the fighting against the false, defeating it and vanquishing it so that justice could prevail, homelands be retrieved and from its mosques would the voice of the mu’azen emerge declaring the establishment of the state of Islam, so that people and things would return each to their right places and Allah is our helper.

“…and if Allah had not prevented men, the one by the other, verily the earth had been corrupted: but Allah is beneficient towards his creatures.” (The Cow – verse 251).

Article Ten:

As the Islamic Resistance Movement paves its way, it will back the oppressed and support the wronged with all its might. It will spare no effort to bring about justice and defeat injustice, in word and deed, in this place and everywhere it can reach and have influence therein.

The defeat of the Ottoman Empire at the end of World War I is the beginning of the end for the Islamic Resistance Movement, when “Islam disappeared from life.” The foreign forces, whether French, British or Zionists are considered “evil,” and caused people to scatter. It is specifically the absence of Islam that is the core of the problem.

The goal of HAMAS is to vanquish the non-Muslims and declare the “establishment of the state of Islam.” Only with complete Islamic control of the region can there be peace and justice. It is the local variant of ISIS.

Hamas Charter, Articles 7 and 8

The Hamas Charter concludes the “definition” section with Articles Seven and Eight which not only point to the universality of its mission, but a call for all Muslims to join their fight against the Jews.

The Universality of the Islamic Resistance Movement:

Article Seven:

As a result of the fact that those Moslems who adhere to the ways of the Islamic Resistance Movement spread all over the world, rally support for it and its stands, strive towards enhancing its struggle, the Movement is a universal one. It is well-equipped for that because of the clarity of its ideology, the nobility of its aim and the loftiness of its objectives.

On this basis, the Movement should be viewed and evaluated, and its role be recognised. He who denies its right, evades supporting it and turns a blind eye to facts, whether intentionally or unintentionally, would awaken to see that events have overtaken him and with no logic to justify his attitude. One should certainly learn from past examples.

The injustice of next-of-kin is harder to bear than the smite of the Indian sword.

“We have also sent down unto thee the book of the Koran with truth, confirming that scripture which was revealed before it; and preserving the same safe from corruption. Judge therefore between them according to that which Allah hath revealed; and follow not their desires, by swerving from the truth which hath come unto thee. Unto every of you have we given a law, and an open path; and if Allah had pleased, he had surely made you one people; but he hath thought it fit to give you different laws, that he might try you in that which he hath given you respectively. Therefore strive to excel each other in good works; unto Allah shall ye all return, and then will he declare unto you that concerning which ye have disagreed.” (The Table, verse 48).

The Islamic Resistance Movement is one of the links in the chain of the struggle against the Zionist invaders. It goes back to 1939, to the emergence of the martyr Izz al-Din al Kissam and his brethren the fighters, members of Moslem Brotherhood. It goes on to reach out and become one with another chain that includes the struggle of the Palestinians and Moslem Brotherhood in the 1948 war and the Jihad operations of the Moslem Brotherhood in 1968 and after.

Moreover, if the links have been distant from each other and if obstacles, placed by those who are the lackeys of Zionism in the way of the fighters obstructed the continuation of the struggle, the Islamic Resistance Movement aspires to the realisation of Allah’s promise, no matter how long that should take. The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him salvation, has said:

“The Day of Judgement will not come about until Moslems fight the Jews (killing the Jews), when the Jew will hide behind stones and trees. The stones and trees will say O Moslems, O Abdulla, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him. Only the Gharkad tree, (evidently a certain kind of tree) would not do that because it is one of the trees of the Jews.” (related by al-Bukhari and Moslem).

The Slogan of the Islamic Resistance Movement:

Article Eight:

Allah is its target, the Prophet is its model, the Koran its constitution: Jihad is its path and death for the sake of Allah is the loftiest of its wishes.

Hamas makes clear throughout the opening section of the charter that it opposes Jews having control of Muslim lands and people and for being “unclean” and “vile” people. In Article Seven, it introduces the notion that these Jews are foreign “Zionist invaders.” Specifically, these Jews have invaded all of Palestine, as the struggle goes back before the 1967 War (so it is not about the “West Bank” and Gaza) and predates the 1948-9 War (meaning it doesn’t even have to do with Jewish sovereignty.) The “struggle” goes back to before 1939, meaning it is about the basic presence of Jews.

The charter mentions Izz al-Din al Kissam (also spelled Izz ad-din al-Qassam), who fought various “invading” forces to the Middle East including the French in Syria (where al-Qassam was born), and the British and Zionists in Palestine. He became a popular figure in Palestinian circles for killing Jewish civilian who accumulating land in Palestine from Arabs. Many of the farms were owned by foreigners (like Arabs in Egypt) and the local Palestinian Arabs worked the land. The incoming Jews not only purchased the land, but took over the work of farming the lands, leaving the Arabs both without income and place to live. Some scholars attribute al-Qassam’s death at the hands of British forces as the launch for the 1936-9 multi-year Arab revolt to stop Jewish immigration. The al-Qassam military wing of Hamas is named after him.

The charter goes on to call out against “lackeys of Zionism,” those Muslims who protect the Jews. It cites a classic verse describing how Muslims must kill Jews, and those Muslims who shield the Jews from death are effectively co-conspirators against Allah who will pay at the Day of Judgement.

Article Eight underscores that the path of Allah is jihad to the death.

The definition of the Hamas movement is a religious war against the “vileness” of the Jews, “invaders” who took over Muslim lands and people. This is a war beyond time and place which must be fought to the death.

The Hamas Charter‘s first four articles declare itself as the embodiment of Islam with a desire to push all non-Muslims off of Muslim lands. Articles Five and Six add some clarity:

Time and Place Extent of the Islamic Resistance Movement:

Article Five:

Time extent of the Islamic Resistance Movement: By adopting Islam as its way of life, the Movement goes back to the time of the birth of the Islamic message, of the righteous ancestor, for Allah is its target, the Prophet is its example and the Koran is its constitution. Its extent in place is anywhere that there are Moslems who embrace Islam as their way of life everywhere in the globe. This being so, it extends to the depth of the earth and reaches out to the heaven.

“Dost thou not see how Allah putteth forth a parable; representing a good word, as a good tree, whose root is firmly fixed in the earth, and whose branches reach unto heaven; which bringeth forth its fruit in all seasons, by the will of its Lord? Allah propoundeth parables unto men, that they may be instructed.” (Abraham – verses 24-25).

Characteristics and Independence:

Article Six:

The Islamic Resistance Movement is a distinguished Palestinian movement, whose allegiance is to Allah, and whose way of life is Islam. It strives to raise the banner of Allah over every inch of Palestine, for under the wing of Islam followers of all religions can coexist in security and safety where their lives, possessions and rights are concerned. In the absence of Islam, strife will be rife, oppression spreads, evil prevails and schisms and wars will break out.

How excellent was the Moslem poet, Mohamed Ikbal, when he wrote:

“If faith is lost, there is no security and there is no life for him who does not adhere to religion. He who accepts life without religion, has taken annihilation as his companion for life.”

Having made clear that the “Islamic Resistance Movement” a/k/a HAMAS is devoted to Islam, Article Five clarifies that its mission extends back to the founding of Islam (7th century) and is relevant wherever there are devout Muslims. Article Six clearly states that “every inch of Palestine” is covered by their mission and is the very focal point of installing their vision of Islam.

Here the charter makes a pivot from Article Three which sought to “rid the land and the people” of non-Muslims, now affording other religions an existence “under the wing of Islam.” This means being a second-class citizen (dhimmi) in a Muslim-ruled country forced to pay a tax (jizyah) to the government. Failure to abide by such structure will mean that “wars will break out,” meaning that HAMAS will never accept anything less.

Hamas’ view of Israel is that it is illegitimate specifically because it is a non-Muslim entity ruling over Muslim lands and people. As such, it seeks the complete destruction of the Jewish State and replacement with a country ruled by sharia law where Jews have the option to live as second class citizens, to convert to Islam, be expelled or killed.

Hamas Charter, Articles 3 and 4

The Hamas Charter‘s first two articles articulate the movement as the embodiment of Islam. It then continues in a more sinister vein:

Structure and Formation

Article Three:

The basic structure of the Islamic Resistance Movement consists of Moslems who have given their allegiance to Allah whom they truly worship, – “I have created the jinn and humans only for the purpose of worshipping” – who know their duty towards themselves, their families and country. In all that, they fear Allah and raise the banner of Jihad in the face of the oppressors, so that they would rid the land and the people of their uncleanliness, vileness and evils.

“But we will oppose truth to vanity, and it shall confound the same; and behold, it shall vanish away.” (Prophets – verse 18).

Article Four:

The Islamic Resistance Movement welcomes every Moslem who embraces its faith, ideology, follows its programme, keeps its secrets, and wants to belong to its ranks and carry out the duty. Allah will certainly reward such one.

Hamas is not only a religious movement based on the principals of Islam, it is only open to Muslims. It opposes any coexistence, as it seeks “to raise the banner of Jihad… [to] rid the land of the [non-Muslim] uncleanliness, vileness and evils.”

American Jewry is Right on Israel

The World Zionist Congress completed its elections which it holds every five years and published the results on March 23, 2020. The voting tally was 123,629, a growth of 118% compared to the 2015 elections.

The enthusiasm for the elections seemed to touch people of all backgrounds and interests with almost every slate showing a net add from 2015 (Ohavei Zion split into Shas Olami and Ohavei Zion, while Green Israel did not run in 2020).

Taking a look in the change in the votes reveals some trends:

While the Reform movement was able to add 9,700 voters from 2015 to 2020, the 45% increase paled to the overall 118% increase in voter turnout. As such, the percentage of the overall votes for the Reform slate declined by 12.9%, from 38.4% to 25.5%. The biggest percentage gainers in the election were the politically right slates of the Zionist Organization of America (+277%) and Herut (+281%). The brand new slate of Eretz Hakodesh was also a stand-out, pulling in over 20,000 votes.

In considering the overall trend of the election, Americans veered strongly to the right, both religiously and politically in their attitudes towards Israel.

Exhibit 3 shows that the religiously right slates added a remarkable 371% votes while the religiously left only grew by 46%. The political divide wasn’t quite as sharp, with the politically right growing by 231% and the politically left slates by 152%. The slates which touted Zionism without the religious or political underpinnings grew by 39%.

There is obviously much speculation as to why the right-leaning voters came out in such great numbers relative to the left-leaning ones. Overall, American Jews still lean heavily towards the left politically and the Orthodox movement is much smaller than the other branches, yet the masses did not come out to vote in the same percentages as right-leaning American Jews.

Mobilization

A key part of getting the votes is simply getting the voters to spend the few minutes and few dollars to cast their vote.

The Mizrachi slate was effective at getting their supporters to participate in this election cycle. The slate consists of Amit, the Orthodox Union, Yeshiva University, Touro, Bnei Akiva, National Council of Young Israel and the Rabbinical Council of America. It worked its email lists and had people at the college campuses urging fellow students to vote for its slate.

The success of Eretz Hakodesh comes from a different orientation than the other slates which rely on established organizational structures. It, like Shas Olami, used the power and draw of its rabbinical leaders. The further right one goes on the religious spectrum, the more inclined one is to follow the directives of one’s spiritual leader. If the rabbis of the devout tell their followers to go out and vote, they will do so without the persistent reminders and second-guessing that exists to a much greater extent in the other denominations.

The Battle Within

The political right rallied the vote in greater numbers than ever before due to the perceived threats to Israel from within the American Jewish community. While Israel has always had hostile Arab and Muslim neighbors, the support of America and diaspora Jewry was never in question, until recently.

Over the past years, the Democratic Party has become more critical of Israel. While the party ditched its pro-Israel platform in 2012, there was still hope among many Jews that the pivot to a “neutral” stance would bring peace to the region. But in 2014, the peace process collapsed and in 2015 the Democratic Obama administration signed the Iranian nuclear deal giving Iran a legal pathway to nuclear weapons without requiring any change in the country’s behavior including its calls to destroy the Jewish State. At the end of 2015, the Obama administration allowed the passage of United Nations Resolution 2334 which declared it illegal for any Jew to live east of the 1949 Armistice Lines including the Old City of Jerusalem. By 2018, vocal anti-Zionists like Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) won seats in Congress promoting a boycott (BDS) of Israel. For many American Jews, it was too much to bear, especially as the two surrounded Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, who is the most anti-Israel presidential candidate ever to run on a national ticket.

The ZOA platform targeted BDS and supported a Unified Jerusalem, fielding a slate of 27 groups like Americans for a Safe Israel, The Lawfare Project, NORPAC, One Israel Fund and Students Supporting Israel. These groups are fully engaged in a mission to support and defend Israel all year. Their Zionism is not a complacent one as it might be for some of the other slates which are pro-Israel, but in a more passive and secondary mode. ZOA, like Herut Zionists, were highly motivated to combat the strong forces turning against Israel from within the American Jewish community.

ZOA Chairman Mark Levenson said “we were at this for nine months and a lot hard work went into getting us here. There are several important issues for us to address including fighting BDS and terrorism and we’re thrilled to have a majority of center-right and right-leaning parties with whom to work with going forward.”

The left-wing was passionate as well, with an additional 34,800 people voting for progressive religious and political slates. The non-Orthodox movements had an advantage of getting people to vote when they gathered at temples on Saturday which the Orthodox groups could not as they do not use computers or pay for items on the Sabbath. But the nearly thirty-five thousand incremental votes only tell part of the story. There are a significant number of left-wing Jews who support groups like Jewish Voice for Peace, Code Pink and IfNotNow. These groups were not allowed to participate in the elections by the American Zionist Movement as they do not support the Jerusalem Program and are viewed as anti-Zionist. Many of those groups’ supporters likely voted for the Hatikvah slate which is viewed as a tad more mainstream and therefore allowed to participate in the elections, but many alt-left Jews likely avoided the WZC election altogether.

Overall, the parties on the right surpassed those on the left, in a dramatic reversal of the 2015 WZC election results which had the left trouncing the right by a margin of 34,804 to 13,371.

Reacting to the results, Vice Chairman of World Zionist Organization and Chairman of World Likud Yaakov Hagoel said “It is amazing to see how the number of ballots cast doubled in this election from the last congress. It is a testament of how the Zionist movement continues to work and to grow even reaching new communities that were not involved in the past. Similarly, we are thrilled that the broad right wing Zionistic factions have grown in number and strength, which will ensure that this World Zionist Congress will move the national institutions in a better direction on behalf of the Jewish nation.”

In July 2015, just a few months after Vice President Joe Biden, Sen. Bernie Sanders and Sen. Elizabeth Warren snubbed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to a joint session of Congress, and one month after the last WZC election, the Jewish people commemorated the holiday of Tisha B’Av, about the destruction of the Jewish Temples. Don Futterman, the Program Director at The Moriah Fund and columnist for the left-wing paper Haaretz wrote the following:

For secular Jews, “Tisha b’Av seems a vestigial organ. It may have had a function in an earlier stage of our evolution, but today seems irrelevant. Many non-Orthodox Jews feel there is enough officially mandated sadness in our calendar.”

Viewing Jerusalem as a “vestigial organ,” likely made it easy for secular Jews to support Obama’s nod to U.N. Resolution 2334. That same attitude may be permeating swaths of progressive American Jewry regarding all of Israel, as an outdated talisman unworthy of support; an easy sacrifice to build bridges to coveted intersectional brethren for more pressing social justice causes. At least that’s what American Jews of the political and religious right believe, and they came out in droves to combat that sentiment and fully support the Jewish State.

An analysis of the Hamas Charter reveals an undeniable truth: that its mission is a religious war of Islam against the Jews.

The first two FirstOneThrough analyses reviewed the charter’s introductory statements. Now it will review the actual articles of the charter, two at a time.

Definition of the Movement

Ideological Starting-Points

Article One:

The Islamic Resistance Movement: The Movement’s programme is Islam. From it, it draws its ideas, ways of thinking and understanding of the universe, life and man. It resorts to it for judgement in all its conduct, and it is inspired by it for guidance of its steps.

The Islamic Resistance Movement’s Relation With the Moslem Brotherhood Group:

Article Two:

The Islamic Resistance Movement is one of the wings of Moslem Brotherhood in Palestine. Moslem Brotherhood Movement is a universal organization which constitutes the largest Islamic movement in modern times. It is characterised by its deep understanding, accurate comprehension and its complete embrace of all Islamic concepts of all aspects of life, culture, creed, politics, economics, education, society, justice and judgement, the spreading of Islam, education, art, information, science of the occult and conversion to Islam.

While the introductory statement to the charter targets Jews as Hamas’s adversary, stating “they [the Jews] are smitten with vileness wheresoever they are found” and “our struggle against the Jews is very great and very serious,” the first articles anchor the Hamas movement directly with Islam.

The Hamas program embraces all Islamic concepts, seeking to spread Islam and convert people to Islam. It is not a movement about self-determination, dignity, economic viability, land or peoplehood, but a devoutly religious movement which seeks to sweep through “Palestine” (which will be clearly defined as the entirety of the region throughout the charter) ridding the land of non-Muslims.

The CoronavirUS is Not Us Versus Them

The hyper-partisan world we live in is pushing a terrible narrative of some people against others in the actual battle between a micro-sized virus combating all of humanity.

Progressives’ Claim of Poor Vs. Rich

Far left media like The New York Times have been writing over the past years about income inequality and wealth inequality and are viewing the coronavirus through the same lens.

The papers write that the poor are “bearing the brunt” of the pandemic and are being “left behind.” Those word choices are simply untrue. Everyone is being assaulted by the pandemic. Rich people are not sitting in the back while poor people are on the front lines fighting the disease to help their wealthy patrons. There are highly educated doctors on the front lines battling for everyone’s benefit, not waiters. The rich aren’t “leaving anyone behind” as everyone who comes into contact with an infected person is being tested.

While lower income professions like fast food establishments do have people working in close proximity and therefore more susceptible to catching the virus, it was a wealthy lawyer from the New York City suburbs who first became sick and spread it to his neighbors. People with lower income have lost their salaries as retail stores and restaurants have closed, but the small business owners who run those locations are actually losing money during the pandemic, not just not making money.

The poor are definitely more vulnerable in not having savings to manage when they are suddenly without wages, but the Times wrote about the pandemic as class warfare. It seemingly believes that elite society has opted to throw low wage workers out of their jobs to keep the wealthy from getting sick.

Trump’s Chinese Virus Vs. Coronavirus

Trump has run on a mantra of “putting America first.” Labeling one’s adversaries with negative names and stereotypes often makes one feel superior and this global adversary affords Trump the ability to play to his theme.

Trump called the virus the “Chinese Virus” because it started in China, rather than Covid-19, the coronavirus of 2019. Doing so provided the president an opportunity to advance an isolationist stance in shutting the borders and keeping people at home against a foreign invader.

Trump is not alone in taking such precautionary steps, but the renaming of the virus was a way of furthering a particular narrative. The shame is that the virus attacks all people and a cure will help all humanity.

During the early months of the coronavirus outbreak in December 2019 and January 2020, the hardest hit countries were China and Iran leading many Arab news outlets to charge that the United States and Israel were waging biological warfare. Some far-left celebrities even accused Israel and Donald Trump’s Jewish son-in-law from developing the virus so that they could get rich from selling the vaccine.

Lost in the discussion is that it SARS-CoV-2, is the latest in a strain Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) which have gone on for years, this one being the 2019 variant which is more contagious. Many pharmaceutical companies around the world have been working on developing vaccines for all strains of SARS for many years.

A virus does not know rich or poor, American or Chinese, Israeli or Arab. It attacks all human beings with the same vigor. It is tragic that a pandemic not only doesn’t serve as a means to pull humanity together, but is used as a vehicle to score political points and further distance people from one another in a time of forced social distancing.

It is a sad commentary on the fabric of decency today.

The Hamas Charter‘s opening lines are replete with Jew hatred. The introduction shifted the screed into a holy prayer.

In The Name Of The Most Merciful Allah

Introduction
Praise be unto Allah, to whom we resort for help, and whose forgiveness, guidance and support we seek; Allah bless the Prophet and grant him salvation, his companions and supporters, and to those who carried out his message and adopted his laws – everlasting prayers and salvation as long as the earth and heaven will last. Hereafter:

O People:
Out of the midst of troubles and the sea of suffering, out of the palpitations of faithful hearts and cleansed arms; out of the sense of duty, and in response to Allah’s command, the call has gone out rallying people together and making them follow the ways of Allah, leading them to have determined will in order to fulfill their role in life, to overcome all obstacles, and surmount the difficulties on the way. Constant preparation has continued and so has the readiness to sacrifice life and all that is precious for the sake of Allah.

Thus it was that the nucleus (of the movement) was formed and started to pave its way through the tempestuous sea of hopes and expectations, of wishes and yearnings, of troubles and obstacles, of pain and challenges, both inside and outside.

When the idea was ripe, the seed grew and the plant struck root in the soil of reality, away from passing emotions, and hateful haste. The Islamic Resistance Movement emerged to carry out its role through striving for the sake of its Creator, its arms intertwined with those of all the fighters for the liberation of Palestine. The spirits of its fighters meet with the spirits of all the fighters who have sacrificed their lives on the soil of Palestine, ever since it was conquered by the companions of the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him salvation, and until this day.

This Covenant of the Islamic Resistance Movement (HAMAS), clarifies its picture, reveals its identity, outlines its stand, explains its aims, speaks about its hopes, and calls for its support, adoption and joining its ranks. Our struggle against the Jews is very great and very serious. It needs all sincere efforts. It is a step that inevitably should be followed by other steps. The Movement is but one squadron that should be supported by more and more squadrons from this vast Arab and Islamic world, until the enemy is vanquished and Allah’s victory is realised.

Thus we see them coming on the horizon “and you shall learn about it hereafter” “Allah hath written, Verily I will prevail, and my apostles: for Allah is strong and mighty.” (The Dispute – verse 21).

“Say to them, This is my way: I invite you to Allah, by an evident demonstration; both I and he who followeth me; and, praise be unto Allah! I am not an idolator.” (Joseph – verse 107).

The Hamas Charter introduces itself as a divine mission from God, literally, “In The Name Of The Most Merciful Allah.” The first two paragraphs are generic and could be a hymn related to any particular undertaking, but upon coming to the end of the second paragraph it is clear that the stakes are very high, perhaps requiring the sacrifice one’s life for Allah’s wishes.

By the fourth paragraph, the holy mission is tied to Hamas’s goal: a modern reincarnation of the seventh century Arab conquest of Palestine.

The next paragraph connects to the message from the Charter’s opening lines, calling for an intense war against the Jews: “Our struggle against the Jews is very great and very serious.” Hamas calls for all Muslims to join them in the fight.

The charter’s introduction closes with two more quotes from Islamic verses, firmly connecting the Hamas goals as one in which Allah would approve.

The Hamas Charter opens with an antisemitic screed against the Jews and an invocation for the world’s Arabs and Muslims to join in a holy jihad to rid Palestine of the vile people. Over thirty-six articles, the charter expanded upon these themes in the most antisemitic foundational document written in modern times.

Hamas Charter, Opening Remarks

The Hamas Charter was crafted in 1988 and comes in at over 9,000 words. It is affectionately called by its drafters “The Covenant of the Islamic Resistance Movement,” and has predominantly been read only by its supporters. That is unfortunate, as it is important for all people to understand the nature of Hamas and its deeply-held antisemitic beliefs.

Over the course of the next couple of months, I will share the charter one section at a time and reveal why every single country in the world should sever any and all ties with the group and demand that it never be allowed to participate in any future elections, let alone become part of a unity government.

In The Name Of The Most Merciful Allah

“Ye are the best nation that hath been raised up unto mankind: ye command that which is just, and ye forbid that which is unjust, and ye believe in Allah. And if they who have received the scriptures had believed, it had surely been the better for them: there are believers among them, but the greater part of them are transgressors. They shall not hurt you, unless with a slight hurt; and if they fight against you, they shall turn their backs to you, and they shall not be helped. They are smitten with vileness wheresoever they are found; unless they obtain security by entering into a treaty with Allah, and a treaty with men; and they draw on themselves indignation from Allah, and they are afflicted with poverty. This they suffer, because they disbelieved the signs of Allah, and slew the prophets unjustly; this, because they were rebellious, and transgressed.” (Al-Imran – verses 109-111).

Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it” (The Martyr, Imam Hassan al-Banna, of blessed memory).

“The Islamic world is on fire. Each of us should pour some water, no matter how little, to extinguish whatever one can without waiting for the others.” (Sheikh Amjad al-Zahawi, of blessed memory).

The opening of the charter quotes three sources, the first coming for a religious text (Al-Imran), the second coming from the founding father of the Muslim Brotherhood (Hassan al-Banna) and the third from an Islamic scholar from Iraq (Amjad al-Zahawi). As the opening line of the charter which calls out “Allah” makes clear, Hamas’s goal is to fuse Islam with modern politics. Such is the Muslim Brotherhood mission in every country in which it operates.

When it comes to Israel, Hamas wants political Islam to be the front line in a jihad against the Jews.

The Religious Text

The sentences “they who have received the scriptures had believed, it had surely been the better for them: there are believers among them, but the greater part of them are transgressors… they suffer, because they disbelieved the signs of Allah, and slew the prophets unjustly; this, because they were rebellious, and transgressed” is about Jews, not Israelis. It is the Jews who received the scriptures but not did believe in the prophets who later came into the world like Mohammed. While there was hope that some Jews would convert to Islam, the majority did not and are considered sinners.

These Jews are not simply “transgressors” for not believing in Allah and Mohammed, they are evil according to the verses, “smitten with vileness wheresoever they are found.” This is tenet of these Islamic scriptures as well as Hamas which selected these specific lines, that all Jews are inherently vile.

But the text offers a way out for the Jews, even today, if “they obtain security by entering into a treaty with Allah, and a treaty with men.” Although the Jews are not worthy, they can find “security” only under Islam.

So opens the Hamas Charter. Not with aspirations for their own people. Not with a desire for independence and dignity. Not with a desire for a homeland or peace. It is a screed against the Jews.

The Muslim Brotherhood

After quoting scriptures, Hamas made clear that its roots are with the Muslim Brotherhood by quoting its founder. Tellingly, the verse chosen was not about the goal of binding Islam and sharia law into modern politics, but about the Jewish State.

“Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it“ builds on the theme of the the opening prayer: Israel is the political manifestation of the vile Jews. It is a holy war obligation for Muslims to obliterate the Jewish State completely, as its existence is an affront to Islam.

The goal of Hamas is to destroy Israel, more than to establish a state for Arabs. To do so is an Islamic religious obligation.

A Religious Scholar

To conclude the opening section of the “Islamic Resistance Movement,” the Hamas drafters quoted a religious scholar. not a local imam from Palestine but one from Iraq.

“The Islamic world is on fire. Each of us should pour some water,” is a call for a global jihad against Israel. The aim of Hamas is that EVERY Muslim around the world SHOULD play a part in confronting the Jewish State.

The opening of the Hamas Charter is a call for global jihad for all Muslims to eradicate the State of Israel and purge the land of the vile Jews, not a call for Arab dignity, peace or independence.

And the Palestinian Arabs elected Hamas to 58% of the parliament, the United Nations pushes for Hamas to be part of a unity government, and the media talks of “Islamic resistance” as a peaceful and natural endeavor.
