The Deep Flaws In The UN’s “Peace” Coordinator

The United Nations’ role in the Middle East is a dangerous farce. It pretends to be an impartial party attempting to bring peace to the volatile region, when in fact it takes only sides with Palestinian Arabs.

The UN has a person appointed to be the “Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process,” Tor Wennesland. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres appointed Wennesland to that role in December 2020 and simultaneously to act as Guterres’ “Personal Representative to the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Palestinian Authority.” How could Israel possibly take the position of such a biased representative seriously? Guterres shot the messenger by cementing him with Palestinian cement shoes from the outset.

Not surprisingly, the “peace process” floundered under Guterres and Wennesland, with the Palestinian Arabs together with backers in Lebanon, Syria, Iran and Yemen all coming for the Jewish State in a regional assault.

The biased and tarnished Wennesland continues to address the UN Security Council and the world via social media. Various biases can be found throughout his comments.

On August 16, 2024, Wennesland tweeted that he condemned settler violence and wanted “to ensure full accountability for all involved,” and further called “on the Israeli government to stop settler violence.”

But Wennesland did the opposite regarding Hamas and other terrorist groups attacking Israel, where he did not call out “Hezbollah” and demanded that Israel use “maximum restraint” in responding to terror.

The hypocrisy is a designed feature of the UN. When Wennesland addressed the UN Security Council on May 29, 2024, he acknowledged the “breakdown of law and order” in Gaza as well as the “well-organized looting of the UNRWA Rafah log base,” but deliberately omitted saying that the looting was done by Hamas. In fact, he implied the opposite, that because Hamas was no longer in charge, there was a breakdown of order.

Wennesland treats Hamas as a trusted partner and uses the political-terrorist group’s talking points. On August 10, 2024, Wennesland condemned on the “devastating strike on a school sheltering thousands of displaced Palestinian, with dozens of fatalities.” The UN itself admitted that those “dozens of fatalities” were terrorists, yet the UN’s “Coordinator for Peace” parroted jihadi terrorist propaganda.

Wennesland views his role as protecting and promoting Palestinian Arabs, not securing peace. It means advancing their narrative, excusing their terrorism, and preventing Israel from eliminating jihadi terrorists.

Wennesland knows that there are numerous allies of Palestinians all attacking Israel; he names Hizbullah, Iran and the Houthis, even while treading gingerly around Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad. It’s because he sees his goal as supporting the creation of a Palestinian state first and foremost, and that means calling for international support for a Palestinian government, even knowing it to be deeply corrupt and antisemitic.

The UN’s idea of a “peace process” is deeply and fundamentally flawed. The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and Coordinator for Middle East Peace Tor Wennesland should both be fired for abetting terrorism, and all UN agencies in the region should be shuttered.

Anti-Israel politicians and pundits are slamming Israel about its attacks in Gaza as it tries to root out the command structure of Hamas, the popular political-terrorist groups that rules Gaza. To listen to them, one would imagine that it is Israel and not Hamas that is flouting the rules of war and the Geneva Convention of 1949.

The Israeli military said that Rafa Salama, Hamas’ Khan Younis brigade commander, was killed in an air strike on July 13 that also targeted the head of the group’s armed wing, Mohammed Deif. Salama was confirmed dead but Deif’s fate is unknown at this time. Perhaps as many as 90 civilians were also killed in the strike.

Assassinating senior military leaders who masterminded the October 7 massive and brutal slaughter in Israel which launched the region into a bloody war is the definition of justice. The two Hamas commanders continued to lead the Palestinian army these past months, and their deaths will hasten the end of the war, sparing thousands of lives.

This is readily apparent to all. So why would Norway’s foreign minister attack Israel for the tragic collateral deaths instead of Palestinian leadership for embedding military leadership within a civilian population?

The Geneva Convention’s Article 51(5b) states clearly that it is against the rules of war to launch “an attack which may be expected to cause incidental loss of civilian life… which would be excessive in relation to the concrete and direct military advantage anticipated.” Article 57 says much the same.

The “concrete and direct military advantage” in killing the heads of Hamas’s military wing is enormous. While the death of 90 civilians is a tragedy, bringing an end to the war would be considered within the guidelines of the rules of war.

Article 51(7) is explicit that armies can operate in civilian areas that are infested with high profile military targets: “The presence or movements of the civilian population or individual civilians shall not be used to render certain points or areas immune from military operations, in particular in attempts to shield military objectives from attacks or to shield, favour or impede military operations.”

In fact, it is Hamas which is violating the Geneva Convention by using civilians to shield terrorists and terrorist infrastructure.

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres similarly inverted reality in attacking Israel and not Hamas. He addressed a group during a fundraising appeal for UNRWA, the agency that pretends that many Palestinian Arabs living in Gaza are somehow refugees. He said “Recent days have brought yet more evacuation orders by Israeli authorities, yet more civilian suffering, and yet more bloodshed. Palestinians in Gaza keep being forced to move like human pinballs across a landscape of destruction and death.”

But surely the head of the United Nations knows that Israel is following the Geneva Convention of 1949 in attempting “to remove the civilian population” to avoid their injury as it brings terrorists to justice. Article 58 specifically states that parties should “avoid locating military objectives within or near densely populated areas.”

Israel is prosecuting a defensive war it never wanted according the principles of the Geneva Convention and complying with the principles of proportionality, distinction and precaution against an enemy sworn to its annihilation which tramples on every human right. Yet the heads of the United Nations and Norway are blind to facts, preferring the genocidal regime in the belief that genuflecting to genocidal maniacs will yield a Palestinian state.

Some in the West believe that acknowledging that Hamas is evil and genocidal will forever prevent the establishment of a Palestinian State as it marks all Palestinian Arabs unworthy and incapable of peaceful coexistence. The truth is the opposite. Shielding Hamas ensures that Palestinians will be trapped in forever wars.

There Is No Basis For A Palestinian “Right of Return”

The single largest issue in the Israeli-Palestinian Arab conflict is the belief among those Arabs that they have a right to move into towns and houses where grandparents lived many decades ago. They call it a “right of return” and state that it is an individual right laid out in international law.

But the claim is false.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (established December 10, 1948) states in Article 13 that people have certain rights regarding movement:

Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country.

Everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each state.

As it relates to the first point, Palestine either was or was not a country before Israel declared itself a state in May 1948. If it was not a country, the UDHR right is irrelevant as it specifically relates only to countries. If it was a state, than the Arabs living in Gaza and the West Bank are already part of such state and have no right to move based on the first clause. Their right to move to Israel under the second clause of moving “within the borders of each state” would mean negating the very existence of Israel, a member state of the United Nations, which would undermine the institution upon which the clause exists (rendering such notion impossible).

If Palestine were considered a state pre-Israel, then the descendants of refugees (DORs) in Lebanon, Syria and Jordan could relocate to Gaza or the West Bank (Palestine), but not to Israel.

So under broad international law, there is no right of return for Palestinian Arabs to Israel regardless of whether one thinks Palestine was a country in 1947.

Palestinian Arabs and their supporters therefore try to use a specific clause within a particular UN General Assembly resolution. UNGA Resolution 194, Article 11 states “Resolves that refugees wishing to return to their homes and live at peace with their neighbours should be permitted to do so at the earliest practicable date, and that compensation should be paid for the property of those choosing not to return and for loss of or damage to property which, under principles of international law or equity, should be made good by the Governments or authorities responsible.”

This resolution has multiple legal issues regarding applicability.

UN General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding, but advisory at the most fundamental. Second, Resolution 194 includes many items including Articles 7 and 8 which places holy places – including those in Nazareth and Jerusalem – under UN control, which neither Israel nor the Palestinian Authority desire. One cannot cherry-pick specific items which one side prefers to make a case; the entirety of that resolution is passed its expiration date.

Significantly, the clause itself demands that those refugees desiring to return to “homes” – which may or may not exist anymore – must live in peace with their neighbors. The many wars and pogroms by Palestinian Arabs, including their overwhelming support for Hamas and the October 7 massacre, show them to reject basic coexistence with Jewish neighbors.

Yet UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres makes a mockery of reality and destroys a pathway to peace when he says the opposite. He often states “the need for tangible progress towards a two-State solution based on 1967 lines, with Jerusalem as the capital of both States, in line with UN resolutions and international law.” That clause makes Palestinian Arabs think that millions of Arabs will get to move to Tel Aviv and Haifa. Their frustration of not moving there leads to frustration and causes massacres as seen on October 7.

The United Nations must make clear that there is no “right of return” for any Palestinian Arab to Israel, full stop. The failure to do so causes bloodshed and suffering.

UN Secretary General Sides With Hezbollah Over Israel

In a shocking display of partisanship for a terrorist organization over a member state, United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres posted publicly that he is concerned about Hezbollah but not Israel.

On June 21, 2024, Guterres posted on X that “the people of the region & the world cannot afford Lebanon to become another Gaza.” In other words, the world cannot allow a member state of the United Nations defend itself from Islamic radicals who are launching attacks. Specifically, the Jewish State must not be allowed to prosecute defensive wars that it never wanted, against foes dedicated to its destruction.

Guterres has shown himself to be completely unfit for the office he holds. The global agency should immediately fire him from office and put in place a person who prioritizes humanity over barbarism, and liberal nation states over jihadi terrorist groups.

Antonio Guterres, the United Nations Secretary General, has long made clear his sympathies for Palestinian Arabs over Israel. Those Arabs are his adopted wards and there are 50 Muslim-majority countries at the UN, so he does their bidding as part of his job.

As part of protecting Palestinian Arabs, he has refused to call for the Hamas terrorists which committed the heinous attacks on October 7 to be brought to justice, and instead urged “maximum restraint,” contrary to how he responds to other terrorist attacks.

On March 15, 2024, Guterres took a step beyond defending Palestinians to accusing Israel of engaging in an ethnically-motivated war against Muslims.

On the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, Guterres led with a call “for a silencing of the guns in Gaza and Sudan. Today, at this important event, I call on all political, religious and community leaders — everyone, everywhere — to join our plea. It’s time for peace.”

This is outrageous.

The war taking place in Sudan is an ethnic battle of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and allied militias against ethnic Masalit Muslims. The RSF deliberately murdered over 1,000 people, somewhat like the Palestinian political-terrorist group Hamas attack on Israelis.

But Guterres inverted the narrative. While the targeted victims were Muslims in Sudan, the targets in the Gaza war were Israeli Jews. The radical jihadists of Hamas engaged in an all-out ethnic war to rid the land of Jews as made clear in their foundational charter. Israel is simply responding to the attack which happened to be committed by radical Muslims. Charging Israel with “Islamophobia” is both a disgusting smear and a whitewashing of the noxious antisemitism of Palestinians.

The United Nations Secretary General is fanning the flames of hatred against the Jewish State, inverting the vile antisemitism of Hamas jihadists to an accusation that Israel is engaged in an anti-Islamic war. His comments should be repudiated by every member of the United Nations and he should be forced to resign.

The United Nations has long been a terrible actor in the Israeli-Arab conflict, perpetuating the conflict through terrible policies and procedures. One of the worst offenses which contributed to the October 7 massacre and the current Gaza War was backing the “right of return” for millions of Arabs into Israel.

The United Nations agency, UNRWA, services roughly 7.5 million people of which 6.7 million are registered as refugees, with another 763,000 on the global dole. The vast majority of the 7.5 million are descendants of people who used to live in Israel in 1947. Amongst these so-called “refugees,” approximately 1.8 million live in Gaza and 1.1 million in the West Bank, a total of 2.9 million, or 43 per cent of UNRWA “refugees” live inside of 1947 Palestine.

These 2.9 million have been told by the United Nations that they will get to move into Israel for the last 75 years, based on a single line in UN General Assembly Resolution 194 of December 1948, that has long passed its expiration date. With that false promise, Gazans spend their time and money building a war infrastructure rather than an economy as they don’t imagine a future in their current neighborhood of historic Palestine, but in the Jewish State.

On January 23, 2024, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres may have laid the groundwork to finally end the dream of these 2.9 million Palestinians that their future homes will be in Israel.

In his remarks to the UN Security Council he said “The right of the Palestinian people to build their own fully independent State must be recognized by all. And any refusal to accept the two-State solution by any party must be firmly rejected. What is the alternative? How would a one-State solution look with such a large number of Palestinians inside without any real sense of freedom, rights and dignity? This would be inconceivable.”

The first part of Guterres’s comments is simply wrong. No state has a right to exist. None. Not Portugal, not China, not South Sudan, not Kurdistan. Individuals have a right to self-determination and there are many ways for that to be realized which do not create another Arab and Muslim country.

The second segment of his remarks, marked in bold above, is an important milestone for the UN. It is the first time Guterres essentially rejected the notion of Arabs swarming Israel – either in a one state solution or as part of a two-state solution in which 6.7 million Arab “refugees” enter the Jewish State.

Finally acknowledging that this will not happen, Guterres should make an unambiguous statement that there is no “right of return” for Arabs into Israel, a stale idea floated over 75 years ago in the midst of the 1948-9 Arab-Israeli War. In addition to such proclamation, he must follow up with actions to dismantle the “refugee” camps which dot Gaza and the West Bank, where UNRWA schools teach young Arabs that they will move into Israel and where UN facilities have keys above the portal to emphasize that the doorway for Palestinians to move into Israel is via the United Nations.

The United Nations finally said the obvious, that millions of Palestinian Arabs moving to Israel is “inconceivable.” It is time to explicitly state that there is no “right of return” and to dismantle the “temporary” refugee camps in Gaza and the West Bank which have long served as incubators for extremism and terrorism.

On January 3, two bombs went off in Iran during ceremonies marking the death of Qassem Soleimani. Soleimani was head of Iran’s Quds Force, and assassinated by the United States four years earlier because it claimed he was “directly and indirectly responsible for the deaths of millions of people.”

Despite the backdrop of Soleimani being a murderer, the fact remained that the bombing was an act of terrorism, so the United Nations felt compelled to issue a statement, despite the victims being supporters of that mass murderer. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres official statement read “The Secretary-General strongly condemns the attack today on a memorial ceremony in Kerman city in Iran, which reportedly killed more than 100 people and injured many more. The Secretary-General calls for those responsible to be held accountable. The Secretary-General expresses his deep condolences to the bereaved families and the people and the Government of Iran. He wishes the injured a speedy recovery.”

Guterres reached out to the government of Iran despite its fomenting wars throughout the Middle East as it pursues nuclear weapons, and also demanded that the terrorists who killed 100 people celebrating a mass murderer be brought to justice. One would therefore imagine a much stronger statement from Guterres for Israel after October 7 when thousands of Palestinians killed 1,200 people and brutally raped and sadistically tortured civilians in their homes in Israel.

The October 7 statement from Guterres was appalling:

“The Secretary-General condemns in the strongest terms this morning’s attack by Hamas against Israeli towns near the Gaza Strip and central Israel, including the firing of thousands of rockets towards Israeli population centres. The attacks have so far claimed numerous Israeli civilian lives and injured many hundreds. The Secretary-General is appalled by reports that civilians have been attacked and abducted from their own homes. The Secretary-General is deeply concerned for the civilian population and urges maximum restraint. Civilians must be respected and protected in accordance with international humanitarian law at all times. The Secretary-General extends his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and calls for the immediate release of all abducted persons. The Secretary-General urges all diplomatic efforts to avoid a wider conflagration. He stresses that violence cannot provide a solution to the conflict, and that only through negotiation leading to a two-State solution can peace be achieved.”

Rather than demand that the terrorists “be held accountable,” as with Iranians, Guterres urged “maximum restraint” by Israel. Instead of offering condolences to victim families AND the state as he did for Iran, Guterres omitted any mention of feelings towards Israel.

In the aftermath of Jews suffering the worst single day killing since the Holocaust and most savage day of sexual assault ever, the head of the United Nations demanded no accountability for the terrorists and no sympathy for Israel. Guterres and the United Nations have demonstrated a failure of basic civility and humanity, and are enemies of justice, peace and the Jewish people.

An estimated 240 people in Israel were ripped from their homes on October 7, 2023. Many witnessed the brutal slaughter of friends and family before they were taken to the terrorist tunnels of Gaza by Hamas.

On November 22, a deal was announced to return the hostages to Israel in exchange for 150 Palestinian Arab terrorists held in Israeli jails, a “humanitarian pause” to the fighting and sending in various items to Gaza including fuel and food.

The United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres was happy at the announcement and issued a short statement:

“The Secretary-General welcomes the agreement reached by Israel and Hamas, with the mediation of Qatar, supported by Egypt and the United States. This is an important step in the right direction, but much more needs to be done.

“The United Nations will mobilize all its capacities to support the implementation of the agreement and maximize its positive impact on the humanitarian situation in Gaza.“

Even as roughly 200 people remain in the clutches of the Palestinian political-terrorist group Hamas, the United Nations still cannot prioritize their well-being and urge their release and instead will only focus on Gazans.

It underscores the imperative for the United States and the western world to stand solidly behind Israel as the UN remains a highly biased anti-Israel organization.

The United Nations Secretary General issued a statement on November 19, 2023 that he was “deeply shocked that two United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) schools were struck in less than 24 hours in Gaza.” He added “I reaffirm that our premises are inviolable.”

Does the UNSG think that Israeli nurseries are similarly inviolable, never to be infringed or dishonored?

Does the United Nations think that Jewish children in Israel should be allowed to go to school without the ruling government of a neighboring territory invading the country, storming the building and shooting children?

Are the playgrounds of Israeli children inviolable, or are Palestinians living nearby allowed to enter and burn children alive?

The fact that UNSG Antonio Guterres refused to demand that Hamas be held accountable for its actions gives an indication that he believes that Israeli schools, playgrounds and nurseries are not protected spaces.

When Guterres concluded his latest statement, “I also want to express my deep appreciation for all the mediation efforts led by the Government of Qatar,” the government which is the main sponsor of Hamas and the leading funder of jihadists in American schools, he also let the world know that Jews in schools everywhere are fair game for jihadi terrorism.

Grading Comments in The 2023 Gaza War

Politicians and presidents of universities are being graded by their reaction to Hamas’s October 7 massacre in Israel and Israel’s response. The pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian communities are keeping score.

Pro- Israel Statements

There are a number of statements that people expect to see, some of which are considered easy and others which show true pro-Israel bona fides.

Condemn October 7. The Hamas attack which killed over 1,200 people was brutal. Most people expect condemning the attack an easy thing to do because of its scale and brutality.
Harsh adjectives of attack. Calling the attack “barbaric”, a “pogrom”, “pure evil” and similar language is similarly expected as a logical extension of the condemnation.
Calling Hamas is a terrorist group. The United States, Canada, United Kingdom and many other countries officially label Hamas a terrorist group, so calling it as such is also not viewed as a major pronouncement but Zionists expect to hear it specifically mentioned now.
Israel has a right to defend itself. This is a natural right and obligation of countries which are attacked. Stating that Israel has such right would normally be considered redundant but nothing seems to be in the Arab-Israeli conflict.
Call to release hostages. Prioritizing the release of an estimated 240 people who were seized in the October 7 attack is a basic humanitarian call. It is surprisingly absent from many public statements, upsetting many Jews and Zionists.
Bring the perpetrators to justice. A natural biproduct of all of these statements is to hold the murderers and abductors to account.

Pro-Palestinian Actions

Pro-Israeli statements blend into pro-Palestinian statements when addressing Israel’s response to the attack. People who condemn violence might want all attacks to end and can hold both pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian statements concurrently. However, when people demonize Israel and support Hamas, the break in the preference becomes clear.

Call for Humanitarian Pause. Israel’s response to the October 7 attack has killed thousands of people. Calling for humanitarian pauses to allow civilians to leave the area and bring in food and fuel is viewed as natural by many peace activists who want to minimize civilian casualties.
Call for Ceasefire. A ceasefire is viewed as much more extreme than a pause, especially early in the Israeli counter-attack. Pro-Israel people want to see the military capabilities of Hamas destroyed and a premature end to the campaign would give Hamas a huge victory. Pro-Palestinians believe that it is the only way to save thousands of Palestinian lives and are not concerned that Hamas may launch more attacks as they promised to do.
Say the October 7 attack had “context.” Backers of Palestinians do not want the narrative of the story to be that Hamas initiated the fight. While people may or may not acknowledge the brutality of the October 7 massacre, they discuss the blockade of Gaza and other Palestinian grievances to frame the discussion.
Rip down Kidnapped posters. The fate of 240 people ripped from their homes undermines the Palestinian narrative which paints Arabs as the victims.
Calling Hamas a “resistance movement”. Hamas calls itself a “resistance” movement, making it sound like a reactionary force rather than a terrorist group. Palestinian sympathizers use the nomenclature, even after the October 7 attack which killed more Jews in a day than any day since the Holocaust.
Not condemning October 7 attack. Many people released statements which skip the Hamas attack and only address Israel’s ongoing attack on Gaza. This is appreciated by the Palestinian community as it frames the oppressor and oppressed narrative to their liking. In contrast, it is considered appalling and a red flag to much of humanity as failing to condemn horrific acts like placing a baby in an oven alive, an action of psychopaths.
Call to “Free Palestine from the River to the Sea.” This demand to end Israel as a Jewish State goes beyond the specific war. It marks the war as the beginning of a liberation of land from Jewish control.
Call to “Globalize the Intifada”. This chant has many iterations like “Intifada revolution”. It spells out the desire to ‘Free Palestine’ with violence as well as either attack Zionists everywhere and/or any entity considered a western imperialist power.
Shouts of “Gas the Jews” and other forms of attack. The call for violence against Jews everywhere, not just in Israel, is the extreme end of pro-Hamas statements, shouted at rallies and in social media.

The scorecard shows people’s preferences in the conflict, like U.S. President Joe Biden and Congressman Ritchie Torres on the pro-Israel side, university leaders like Columbia University president Minouche Shafik who say nothing, and United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, Queen Rania of Jordan and Rep. Rashida Tlaib on the pro-Palestinian side.

Politicians, university presidents and corporate CEOs who all waded into politics in the Russia-Ukraine War and Black Lives Matter incidents, are being pushed to make statements about the 2023 Gaza War, with many angering supporters of each side. Everyone is checking the scorecard to gauge where people’s loyalties lie.
