Bahrain Takes All the COVID-19 Tests But Doesn’t Give a Cent to the WHO

The pandemic is reaching all corners of the world and the United Nations Secretary General is sounding the sirens about poor countries in Africa being at great risk of being overwhelmed by the virus. UN Secretary-General António Guterres saidWe are as strong as the weakest health systems. Protecting the developing world is not a matter of charity or generosity but a question of enlightened self-interest.

He might want to address the rich Persian Gulf monarchies more directly.

Most of the COVID-19 tests have been administered by large countries like India, and hard hit countries like the United States, Italy and Spain. The table below shows the top twenty countries where tests have been administered.

Deaths/ Total Tests/ Population
Country 1M pop Tests 1M pop
USA 278 12,253,346 37,045 330,769,370

Saudi Arabia 9 601,954 17,324 34,745,848

One country stands out in the top 20 – the United Arab Emirates. A country with fewer than 10 million people has already had over 1.6 million tests performed. It amounts to a whopping 162,108 tests per million people, or over five times the average of 31,700 per million for the other top countries.

This rich Muslim kingdom is not an outlier. Nearby Bahrain has had 143,508 tests per 1 million people.

While the UAE does contribute to the World Health Organization (less than 1.0% of WHO’s budget), Bahrain gives virtually nothing – less than Sudan, Mali, Eritrea, Uganda, Lesotho and many other African countries.

Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of Bahrain

Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Oman have run 56,243, 17,324 and 11,985 tests per million people, respectively, a fraction of the rate of Bahrain, but at least each has contributed to the WHO.

Bahrain has one of the highest GDP per capita‘s in the world and has performed among the highest number of COVID-19 tests in the world, but barely gives a penny to the World Health Organization. Forget select vilification of the US for pulling funding of WHO because of the organization’s failures in handling the pandemic; how about a simple mention that it’s time for the rich oil kingdoms to contribute their share.

The Joy of Lecturing Jews

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio got into hot water with some parts of the Jewish world for chastising the broad community because hundreds of Ultra-Orthodox Jews came out to pay their respects for a rabbi who passed away amid the coronavirus pandemic.

One can agree or disagree with the multitudes coming out to pay respects for the deceased which risked furthering the contagion. The matter at hand is that the far-left progressive mayor had never called out and lectured any religious or minority group, and only “the Jewish community” got scolded with “the time for warnings has passed.”

This is not new. The left has a history of berating Jews as insolent children.

In November 2015, Vice President Joe Biden addressed the Union of Reform Judaism which is headed by far left-wing rabbis. During his remarks, Biden stabbed his finger and lambasted a private Israeli citizen who was being considered for a government position who had made some comments about President Obama years prior, sayingThere is no excuse, there should be no tolerance for any member or employee of the Israeli administration referring to the president of United States in derogatory terms. Period, period, period, period!” This attack on old comments of a private citizen came from the same Administration that had just called Israeli Prime Minister a “chicksh*t.

It’s not broad hypocrisy; it’s quite select and targeted at Jews. The liberal politicians don’t give a second thought to calling out Jews even while they excuse other groups.

When the “progressive” New York Times reported on the de Blasio incident, it wrote “The local police department did not stand in their way, a testament to the Hasidic community’s influence in the Williamsburg neighborhood.” That’s polite liberal speak for Jew’s have power over the police. They’re puppet-masters. An old noxious libel.

New York Times cover story on April 30, 2020 wrote about Jewish “influence” over the police department.

When the far-left news program CNN had Christiane Amanpour interviewing  Congresswoman Ilan Omar in January 2019, she asked Omar the following:

“Can I move on to something that is generally sort of a right of passage for politicians in the United States and that is sort of to profess sort of fealty, or at least pay homage, to AIPAC, the pro-Israel PAC that is very, very prominent.”

That’s the largest news program in the world saying that the entirety of Congress serves as vassals for the Israeli lobby.

And it did so without a thought or concern or any backlash.

The liberal press and politicians would never treat the Black, Hispanic or Asian community in such fashion. But the Jews are different. Just ask the United Nations.

The UN has sanctified the absurd Muslim Arab position that Jews living in the Old City of Jerusalem are illegal settlers, even those living in the Jewish Quarter. Every year, the UN passes resolutions calling for the eviction of those Jews who have altered “the character” of Jerusalem, Judaism’s holiest city.

And it’s not just about the land the Jews live on – it’s the Jewish people themselves. The UN targets “Islamophobia” and has demanded that terrorism never be linked to any religion – unless it’s the religion of the Jews. The UN avoids saying “Islamic radicals” but is fine calling out “Jewish extremists.

While one can understand the 50+ Muslim and Arab nations pushing such drivel, it defies logic that liberal countries do not come out forcefully against the invective.

Reasons for Open Progressive Disdain of Jews

Some people argue that the Democrats can abuse the Jews because the Jews are forever loyal, with between 64% and 80% voting for the Democratic nominee every presidential election. That argument falls flat. The black community is much more loyal to the Democratic party but will never be ridiculed and slandered in public like Jews.

There are three primary reasons behind progressives only attacking Jews:

  • Jews lack cohesion found in other minorities
  • Jews are viewed as a privileged class
  • Jews will forever be a small niche group

Jews Lack Cohesion

If someone takes a shot at a Black person, the entire Black community rallies in collective support. Even Blacks who thought OJ Simpson was guilty of murder were thrilled that he was found not guilty. When Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke before a joint session of Congress about the Iran deal, Blacks around the country didn’t pause about the existential threat facing Israel but considered the snub of a Black president.

The Black community is cohesive and sees the world through a particular Black lens. But not so for the Jews.

Liberal Jews – particularly non-Orthodox ones – see themselves primarily as progressives and Jews secondarily. For them, Judaism is a value system based on “Tikkun Olam,” so any action that feels “progressive” is inherently Jewish to them, even if it abuses fellow Jews. They will rally to support hateful comments made by “progressives” like Ilan Omar, Rashida Tlaib and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, even while the rest of the Jewish community feels hurt and abused.

There is no cohesive Jewish community as exists for other minorities. Without cohesion, it’s easy to borrow the fig leaf of liberal Jews who will absolve any charge of antisemitism. So when Obama trashed the Jewish State, J Street came out with the liberal shield; when he ignored antisemitism as the motivation of Muslim terrorists shooting up a kosher supermarket, liberals swarmed to the defense of their true savior.

Consider that Biden attacked a private Jewish Israeli – to a Jewish audience! And the alt-left Jews stood and cheered! Would any politician ever consider going into a minority forum and loudly criticize a member of that minority group? Never. Unless they knew that the comments would be warmly embraced, which could only happen among progressive Jews.

Jews are Privileged

Progressives rally to minorities and groups considered under-privileged and even more so in today’s world of “intersectionality”. Liberals are animated and engaged in situations where they feel empathy, which directs their attention to those doing poorly.

The Black, Hispanic and LGBT communities are viewed by liberals as suffering from discrimination embedded in the fabric of society (the fact the Jews suffer hate crimes much more than these groups is neither acknowledged nor internalized). These marginalized groups WANT to be part of society but have been shut out.

But liberals – including Jewish liberals – see Jews in three camps: the rich bankers and CEO’s who must be pulled down to flatten society, the Ultra-Orthodox Jews who hate gays, decided to have too many kids and who DON’T WANT to be part of society, and open-minded progressives whose Judaism is solely cultural. They hate the first two categories and embrace the third as comrades.

Biden had no qualms chiding a private Israeli citizen or the government of Israel for building in their holiest city because he thinks that the Jewish State is a unique kind of ally – one already fat from America. The price for American support is to shut up, stop complaining and do what the liberals demand, like a parent directing an out of control child. There’s no liberal empathy for this rich and powerful country, a position completely at odds with Conservatives who see Israel as a powerful trust-worthy ally in an important and volatile region.

For its part, the United Nations thinks it created Israel and failed to deliver a Palestinian state so has adopted the Palestinian Arabs as eternal wards. This combination enables the liberal European nations in the global organization to think Israel has too much relative to Palestinian Arabs and warps their orientation.

The Future of Small Numbers

Politics has always been a game of numbers. At the UN, would you rather gain the votes of dozens of Muslim and Arab countries or a single Jewish State? In bilateral negotiations, would you rather market your products to 1.8 billion Muslims or 14 million Jews?

For liberal politicians, the dynamic is magnified by the desire to “equitize” society by flattening the distribution of everything. A niche group which accounts for 0.2% of the global population but 20% of the Nobel prizes is not viewed as CONTRIBUTING disproportionately to the world but TAKING disproportionately. Liberals want to see other groups gaining ground at the expense of these niche “takers.”

When de Blasio rethinks education in New York, he thinks about how to get more Black and Hispanic kids into good high schools and college, not Jews. When Jews ask for police protection for their schools, the liberal crowd goes nuts and does everything they can to shut it down with demands that Jews pay for their own protection and not take from minority public school kids.

Hispanics and Blacks make up 18.3% and 13.4% of the US population, respectively, and those percentages are growing. The Muslim population will surpass the Jews in the United States by 2040 according to Pew Research, doubling in size from today, while the Jewish population will barely budge, to fall below 2% of the population.

Progressives falsely market themselves as looking out for minorities. They are actually seeking an equality of outcome in a broad redistribution revolution. People of color and Muslims are their focus and their pathway to power because of the VOLUME of people and votes. Tapping into Muslim anti-Zionism with Israel bashing and ignoring Black antisemitism are fruitful ways to advance their alt-left agenda. Losing a handful of Jewish votes is easy arithmetic.

The left-wing politicians and media chastise Jews without fear as progressive diaphanous-Jews deflect any criticism. The liberal members of the United Nations abstain or vote for voluminous and venomous resolutions against the Jewish State in an appeal to the vast Muslim market. And who doesn’t enjoy taking the chosen people down a peg or two?

The Jews are forever privileged, small and lacking in unity. Easy targets for progressive politicians to berate and liberal media to vilify in their appeal to the growing audience seeking an intersectional revolution.

Hamas Charter, Articles 3 and 4

The Hamas Charter‘s first two articles articulate the movement as the embodiment of Islam. It then continues in a more sinister vein:

Structure and Formation

Article Three:

The basic structure of the Islamic Resistance Movement consists of Moslems who have given their allegiance to Allah whom they truly worship, – “I have created the jinn and humans only for the purpose of worshipping” – who know their duty towards themselves, their families and country. In all that, they fear Allah and raise the banner of Jihad in the face of the oppressors, so that they would rid the land and the people of their uncleanliness, vileness and evils.

“But we will oppose truth to vanity, and it shall confound the same; and behold, it shall vanish away.” (Prophets – verse 18).

Article Four:

The Islamic Resistance Movement welcomes every Moslem who embraces its faith, ideology, follows its programme, keeps its secrets, and wants to belong to its ranks and carry out the duty. Allah will certainly reward such one.

Hamas is not only a religious movement based on the principals of Islam, it is only open to Muslims. It opposes any coexistence, as it seeks “to raise the banner of Jihad… [to] rid the land of the [non-Muslim] uncleanliness, vileness and evils.”

And the Palestinian Arabs elected Hamas to 58% of the parliament with this charter, the United Nations pushes for Hamas to be part of a unity government, and the media talks of “Islamic resistance” as a peaceful and natural endeavor.

Bernie Sanders’ Antisemitic and Anti-Zionist Friends

It is worrying when terrible people appreciate you and the things you say. It forces a moment to pause and reflect on your language and message, but, it is possible that the vile audience may be outliers who misinterpret you.

President Donald Trump disavowed the endorsement of anti-Semite David Duke but many liberals still believe that the basic fact that Duke was drawn to Trump’s rhetoric was enough of a signal that Trump traded in hate.

So how can anyone who claims to not be an anti-Semite or be pro-Israel go anywhere near Senator Bernie Sanders who WELCOMES, ENDORSES and CELEBRATES ANTISEMITES and ANTI-ZIONISTS.

Here is a selection of some of Sanders’ buddies and surrogates.

Linda Sarsour

Muslim Women’s March organizer is a proud anti-Zionist and slams anyone who takes issues with her tirades of hate. Here is a selection of some of her remarks:

  • “Nothing is creepier than Zionism. Challenge racism”
  • “We need to dismantle the Israeli occupation of Palestine, and that requires us to dismantle AIPAC too.”
  • “peace in the Middle East does not mean that we have to support right wing racist governments that currently exist in Israel
  • “If you’re on the side of the oppressor [Israel], or you’re defending the oppressor, or you’re actually trying to humanize the oppressor
  • “any visible Palestinian-American woman who is at the forefront of any social-justice movement is an immediate target of the right wing and right-wing Zionists
  • Israeli apartheid regime”
  • Israel is Built on the Idea That Jews are Supreme to Everyone Else
  • “Jesus was a Palestinian of Nazareth.” —– a lie, like everything else she said.

Fear not. The hater of Israel does a soft side to her. For Bernie Sanders:

  • I love Bernie Sanders and want him to be the President of the United States.”

Cong. Ilan Omar

Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has attacked Israel, pro-Israeli Americans and AIPAC, the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee:

  • “Israel has hypnotized the world, may Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel.”
  • “It’s all about the Benjamins baby,” meaning AIPAC
  • “a lot of our Jewish constituents, a lot of our allies, go to thinking that everything we say about Israel, to be anti-Semitic, because we are Muslim.” (inverting cause-and-effect that it’s not her antisemitism, but Jewish hatred of Muslims at the root of her dislike – a double insult)
  • “I want to talk about the political influence in this country that says it is OK for people to push for allegiance to a foreign country [Israel]”

Regarding Sanders, Omar said “Proud to endorse @SenSanders for President, glad that @AOC and @RashidaTlaib are on board too”

Bernie Sanders said that Omar was “one of the greatest people I know.”

Sanders is not alone. That same racist that expressed support for Donald Trump did the same for Omar. David Duke said “By defiance to Z.O.G. [Zionist Occupation Government] Ilhan Omar is NOW the most important Member of the US Congress!”

Former British MP George Galloway

George Galloway cozies up to terrorist groups like Hezbollah and Hamas the way a newborn cub cleaves to its mother. His various forms of Holocaust denial and overall vitriol made it difficult to stay in government.

  • Nazism and Zionism were two sides of the same coin.”
  • “the Zionist movement and the newspapers and news media which are controlled by Zionism
  • I glorify the Hezbollah national resistance movement, and I glorify the leader of Hezbollah, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah”
  • “the Palestinian people in Gaza are the new Warsaw Ghetto, and those who are murdering them are the equivalent of those who murdered the Jews in Warsaw in 1943,” equating Jews with Nazis

In regards to Bernie Sanders, he offered the following tweet:

  • “@SenSanders represents the best hope for the people of the USA and the world”

Former British Head of Labour Jeremy Corbyn

The antisemitism that took root in the Labour Party under Corbyn was horrific. An estimated 87 per cent of British Jews consider Corbyn to be an antisemite and many Jewish members of Parliament resigned because of him. The former Chief Rabbi of Britain, Lord Jonathan Sachs said that Corbyn gives “support to racists, terrorists and dealers of hate, who want to kill Jews and remove Israel from the map,” and uses “the language of classic prewar European antisemitism.” Some of Corbyn’s comments:

  • “you saw apartheid being introduced all over the West Bank of Palestine.”
  • “I suspect the hand of Israel in this whole process of destabilization [of Egypt].”
  • “The West Bank [is] under occupation of the very sort that is recognizable by many people in Europe who suffered occupation during the Second World War,” comparing the Jewish State to Nazi Germany
  • “I think the boycott campaign, divestment campaign, is part and parcel of a legal process that has to be adopted.”

Sanders loves the man. He offered the following comments about Corbyn:

  • what Corbyn has tried to do with the Labour Party is not dissimilar  to what some of us are trying to do to the Democratic Party.”
  • I have been very impressed by the work that Corbyn has done and the campaign he is running and I wish him the very best.”

Cong. Rashida Tlaib

Tlaib is a member of the U.S. House of Representatives who gained fame for cursing out President Donald Trump as soon as she was sworn into office. Her comments about Jews and Israel have had a similar streak of invective:

  • the right to boycott the racist policies of the government and state of Israel.”
  • “there is continued dehumanization and racist policies by the State of Israel
  • “KIDNAPPED & EXECUTED 7 year old #Palestinian child Qusai was kidnapped by a Herd of violent #Israeli settlerswas a re-tweet of a false news story about a boy who accidentally drowned. She made no apology for the post.
  • “it was my ancestors, Palestinians, who lost their land and some lost their lives, their livelihood, their human dignity, their existence in many ways, have been wiped out, and some people’s passports… I mean, just all of it was in the name of trying to create a safe haven for Jews.” A complete denial and inversion of facts when her ancestors fought to keep the Jews out of Palestine and conspired with the Nazis.

Regarding Sanders, Tlaib tweeted “I am endorsing Amo Bernie Sanders because he’s not gonna sell us out.

Keith Ellison

Keith Ellison had been a Congressman before moving to a senior position at the Democratic National Committee.

  • “Whether one supports or opposes the establishment of Israel in Palestine and Israel’s present policies, Zionism, the ideological undergirding of Israel, is a debatable political philosophy.
  • “Political Zionism is off-limits no matter what dubious circumstances Israel was founded under; no matter what the Zionists do to the Palestinians; and no matter what wicked regimes Israel allies itself with – like South Africa. This position is untenable.”
  • “The United States’ foreign policy in the Middle East is governed by what is good or bad through a country of seven million people [Israel]. A region of 350 million all turns on a country of 7 million. Does that make sense? Is that logic?”

Noted Democratic donor and Israeli-American Haim Saban said the following of Ellison:

  • “If you go back to his positions, his [Ellison’s] statements, his speeches, the ways he voted, he’s clearly an antisemite and anti-Israel individual.

Cornel West

Sanders turned to Princeton University professor Cornel West in 2016 to help him draft the official policies of the Democratic Party. He was proud to list him as a supporter in 2016 and again in this election cycle. Here are some choice words from West on Israel:

  • “for too long, the Democratic Party has been beholden to AIPAC
  • “the only option a desperate Palestinian counter-violent struggle against the structural and military violence of the occupying Israeli state”
  • “the suffering of precious Palestinians under a vicious Israeli occupation is a crime against humanity
  • “settler-colonial enterprise”
  • Gaza is not just a “kind of” concentration camp, it is the hood on steroids.”
  • “The rockets of Hamas indeed are morally wrong and politically ineffective – but these crimes pale in the face of the U.S. supported Israeli slaughters of innocent civilians
  • “heroic Palestinian tradition of critique and resistance”
  • “‘Shame the Congressional Black Caucus’ 4 not denouncing #Israeliapartheid
  • Israeli state terrorism in action and its Jewish racism in motion.”

His long screed of attacks on Israel never made Sanders pause about embracing the man.

Noam Chomsky

Noam Chomsky is a linguist and a proud progressive who trashes Israel frequently.

  • Israel’s “escalating policy of apartheid,”
  • “for decades, Israel has been kidnapping and killing civilians,”
  • “Israel is virtually a US military base, an offshoot of the US military system”
  • “It [Israel] carried out oppressive, brutal often murderous policies – mainly the usual imperial techniques: humiliation, degradation”
  • “you can be both an anti-Semitic Christian fundamentalist and a strong supporter of Israeli oppression and atrocities.”
  • Jews in the US are the most privileged and influential part of the population. You find occasional instances of anti-Semitism but they are marginal. There’s plenty of racism, but it’s directed against Blacks, Latinos, Arabs are targets of enormous racism.” Note: Jews are statistically more likely to suffer hate crimes than any other group by a wide margin.
  • In the Occupied Territories, what Israel is doing is much worse than apartheid. To call it apartheid is a gift to Israel, at least if by ‘apartheid’ you mean South African-style apartheid. What is happening in the Occupied Territories is much worse. There is a crucial difference. The South African Nationalists needed the black population. That was their workforce…The Israeli relationship to the Palestinians in the Occupied Territories is totally different. They just do not want them. They want them out, or at least in prison.”

Regarding Bernie Sanders, Chomsky said “If I were voting in the primary, I would vote for him.”

Other Notable Endorsements

The Sanders campaign proudly lists many other people who endorse the Democratic Socialist.

  • British MP Richard Burgon makes the list. He once said “The enemy of the Palestinian people are Zionists, and Zionism is the enemy of peace and the enemy of the Palestinian people.”
  • Scottish MP Ross Greer proudly endorses Bernie. He also says “Israel is not a beacon of democracy and decency. It is a colonial occupier, an apartheid state and an abuser of children.”
  • Canadian MP Niki Ashton is a supporter of the BDS movement against Israel and attended a rally supporting Palestinian terrorists saying she “was honoured to stand with many in remembering the Nakba”
  • Seattle City Council Member Kshama Sawant felt it appropriate to weigh in on Israel and pushed to have all members of the city council sign a letter saying “We also call for an immediate end to all U.S. government military aid for the Israel.”
  • Former Ohio State Senator Nina Turner weighed in on the 2016 Democratic platform and tweetedIt’s heavy in here right now #DemPlatform debate over ending occupation and illegal settlements Israel-Palestine…heavy!!!”

The list of anti-Israel Bernie supporters goes on.

In the other direction, Bernie Sanders has endorsed some alt-leftists in their own search for political gold. Sanders endorsed Cenk Uygur saying “Cenk has been a longtime fighter against the corrupt forces in our politics and he’s inspired people all across the country.” This is the same Cenk who saidIsrael is a brutal, fascist ethnostate posing as a Democracy.” Sanders must find such statements inspiring.

Bernie Sanders is very proud of his anti-Zionist surrogates who peddle in antisemitic tropes and celebrate the murderers of Jews. Are you just as proud of Bernie?

Mike Bloomberg, Where #NeverTrump Meets #NeverBernie

It was a mild January evening in Westchester County, New York, and a number of people assembled in a private home to consider promoting the former mayor from New York City, Michael Bloomberg, to become the Democratic candidate for president.

The Democrat Party already had an over-supply of people running for president but people in this liberal enclave were concerned that none of them could defeat Donald Trump. So thirty middle-aged Jews assembled to consider how they could help propel Mike into the coveted role to challenge the president.

A member of Bloomberg’s campaign responsible for bringing out the Jewish vote was already speaking when a Libertarian who had walked away from the Democratic Party and his teenage son joined the presentation. The two grabbed seats and listened.

The audience was clearly liberal and talked about how they wanted anyone but Trump but feared that none of the candidates could actually beat him. Bloomberg’s point man essentially said that Bloomberg gave Jews all of the things they liked about Trump (the strong economy and support of Israel), without any of his terrible policies regarding immigrants, the LGBT community, the environment and a host of other failures. The audience nodded in approval.

Except for the Libertarian.

“I’m not here as an anyone but Trump person. I’m here as an anyone by Sanders or Warren person. Those two will lead this country into a civil war and/or an abyss. If Sanders wins the nomination, not only will I vote for Trump, I will actively campaign and raise funds for him.”

An awkward silence filled the air. The liberals could not fathom a fellow Jew despising a progressive.

The Bloomberg point man broke the tension by asking people to bring up items which were most important to them. A hand sprang up and a 60-year old man yelled “abortion!” Another person said “income inequality.” A third said “gun control.”

The sole teenager in the room offered “addressing the ballooning national debt.” People paused and noted that they appreciated that a young person was concerned about the outrageous debt he was being handed as an inheritance, but one sensed that they were disappointed that he did not say “climate change.”

When the moderator asked about people’s concerns about the mayor, several people talked about his stop-and-frisk policy which seemed racist, and whether the country was interested in voting for a Jewish billionaire. The Libertarian silently took notes and didn’t offer up his concerns, of which there were plenty:

  • Stop-and-frisk was not a policy designed to attack minorities but one designed against gun ownership. One could call it the Beto O’Rourke “Hell Yes, I’ll Take Your Gun” plan, which narrowly targeting minority neighborhoods in New York City where crime and gun ownership was highest. Will that be Bloomberg’s plan nationwide?
  • The mayor banned super-sized sodas, in what was called “Nanny-gate.” How many freedoms will this man shut down as president because he thinks he knows better what’s good for you?
  • He rammed through his third term as mayor, even though there was a two-term limit in New York City. He’s every bit as pompous and egotistical as Trump.

But that night was not about trashing Bloomberg as much as trying to get him off of a slow and cold start.

Bloomberg’s Jewish liaison made a point that Bloomberg was not going to run a campaign focused on attacking his Democratic rivals; he believed that they were already too weak, with the exception of Sanders who Bloomberg felt could never win. But left unsaid was the objection of Bloomberg and the attendees that night to the other moderates running:

  • Former Vice President Joe Biden is clearly showing his age, and not in a good way. He was famous for putting his foot in his mouth during a long political career, but now nobody thinks he can even find his mouth today. Add his propensity for smelling women’s hair in the #MeToo moment and his son’s sweetheart deal in Ukraine and all realize he has as much of a chance at a return to political office as W Bush.
  • Pete Buttigieg clearly is a very sharp debater, but everyone knows that vast swathes of the country – including religious and black communities – will not vote for a gay person. Yes it’s 2020, but those are the facts and would you rather acknowledge them or go down with them?
  • Amy Klobuchar seems to have no truly objectionable traits and could gather broad appeal from moderates in the Democratic and Republican parties. But she may have as much charm as fellow Minnesotan Walter Mondale who was routed in his presidential run.

So enter sandman, Mike Bloomberg, playing Yankee reliever Mariano Rivera in the late innings. Will he save the Democratic Party from embracing the alt-left? Will he do it by ultimately putting his money behind either Klobuchar or Buttigieg, rather than backing himself?

Time will tell.

For now, Bloomberg is the only name which brings #NeverTrumpers and #NeverSanders into the same room.

The March of Silent Feet

An estimated 25,000 people marched from Manhattan’s City Hall over the Brooklyn Bridge on January 5, 2020. The message from the group organizers – mainly Jewish alphabet groups like UJA, AJC, ADL and JCRC – was “No Hate. No Fear.” The signs were everywhere, but few of the marchers uttered the words.

Various politicians lined up to address the TV cameras but not the audience before the march took place, including New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Senator Chuck Schumer. The masses then followed the politicians over the bridge to a park in Brooklyn, escorted by scores of police and members of CSS, the Jewish Community Security Service.

The people came from beyond the five boroughs including Westchester, New Jersey, Connecticut, Washington D.C. and Canada. There were a few people in town from Florida and Israel who joined the protest, as well as a number who used to live in Quebec and France. The attitude of the crowd was much the same: frustration but not trepidation.

The tagline of the event was roundly dismissed: “No hate?” That’s an absurd concept. People hate as naturally as they love. Hatred will never be vanquished. However, we should seek and do our utmost to advance a world with no blanket hatred of groups of people. Hating a person because of an action may be warranted, but not a collective. But even more pressing, no violence – that’s what people truly demand.

The march took place in the shadow of growing violence against Jews in the tri-state NY/NJ/CT area including shootings, stabbings, punchings, assaults and throwing bricks in people’s faces. And not just any faces – Jews, specifically. The march’s motto was deaf to that point.

The audience tacitly showed its disapproval when the march’s principal orchestrator, Michael Miller, CEO of the JCRC urged the crowd to repeat after him “No Hate. No Fear. No Hate. No Fear.” Generic hate? What about antisemitism specifically? Very few people echoed Miller.

However, the crowd was enthusiastic to the remarks made by Devorah Halberstam, mother of Ari Halberstam who was killed while riding in a bus over the Brooklyn Bridge in 1994. She demanded justice for victims with real punishments for perpetrators of hate crimes. She urged everyone to be proud Jews and not hide their religiosity. Her declarations resonated: Jewish Lives Matter.

Other members of the Jewish community also addressed the crowd including David Harris, CEO of the AJC, Eric Goldstein, CEO of the UJA, and Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the ADL. They each sought to address the problem but without naming names.

They called out the noxious hatred from the alt-right, people who committed the horrible murders in Pittsburgh and Poway, and they also said that the problem was not limited to the right-wing fringe, as the attacks in Jersey City, Brooklyn and Monsey clearly showed. But they did not say clearly that the alt-left was a problem, nor Black antisemitism nor Muslim antisemitism. They simply noted antisemitism was not limited to the alt-right and also stemmed from some people in “minority groups.”

If the alt-right can be condemned, why can’t the other anti-Semites be called out?

It was good and proper that the leaders noted a certain “congresswoman from Michigan” who condemned the shootings in Jersey City as a work of white supremacists, who then had to delete the tweet when it was revealed that it was the work of Black people, and then never said another word on the subject, obviously showing she doesn’t give a damn about antisemitism.

It was appropriate that speakers condemned another certain congresswoman who said that the Jews buy off members of Congress to support the evil Jewish State.

While inelegant, the contortions to avoid naming their names (Tlaib and Omar) was perhaps smart: there is (perhaps) nothing to be gained by turning antisemitism into a partisan issue. AJC’s Harris noted that antisemitism is not a Jewish issue but a non-Jewish issue in which Jews have a vested interest. As such, it would not serve the cause to make it difficult for people of all political and religious backgrounds to advance the mission.

But why not clearly call out Jew-hatred instead of generic “hate” in the placards? Why not denounce the alt-left as much as the alt-right for fanning the flames of Jew-hatred? Why was it only an angry mother who was willing to state the obvious and call for action?

Jews have always been the most targeted group of hate crimes in the United States according to data from the FBI: almost three times as likely to suffer a hate crime as an average Black person, and 2.4 times and 1.8 times as much as an average Muslim and LGBTQ person, respectively. But historically the attacks against Jews were principally against property. However, over the past five years, attacks against their persons have increased, and since 2018, murder.

So, at long last, the leaders of Jewish organizations held a march against the most common form of hatred, long after women held marches in D.C., gay people held sit ins, and Black people gathered in their Million Man March. But there will be no manifesto like BlackLivesMatter nor direct finger-pointing at antisemitic Congresspeople to be stripped of their committees, antisemites on schools boards to be removed from office, nor condemnation for politicians who block funding for security at religious schools.

Because at the end of the day, the leadership of American Jewry’s alphabet soup want to play politely. They will demand nothing from politicians, just donations from Jews. The leaders believe that most American Jews simply want to be left alone, to be anonymous; part of the wallpaper of the American scenery. Modern Jews may worry about the spike in antisemitism but believe in their hearts it’s still only a problem for the broadcast devout. As such, the leadership will ruffle few feathers and enjoy the thrill of hobnobbing with the powerful.

Secular Jews came out to defend the visibly ultra-Orthodox in a march of silent feet, still believing such hate will either dissipate on its own, or pass them over as they turn to their right under cover of whiteness or their left among their intersectional brethren with genuine genuflectional guilt.

Will it take more mayhem to demand more of ourselves and our leaders, or we will be wise enough to demand new leaders like Devorah Halberstam?

J Street is Only Considered “Pro-Israel” in Progressive Circles

J Street held its annual conference in late October 2019 where it had several Democratic presidential candidates address the left-wing crowd. The loudest applause was, not surprisingly, heard for the most progressive candidates: Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.

Sen. Bernie Sanders addressing J Street Conference October 28, 2019
It is interesting that J Street bills itself as “pro-Israel” when the crowd at its annual event gave a standing ovation to the most anti-Israel presidential candidate since the founding of the Jewish State. Sanders has accused Israel of war crimes, being racist and wants to divert funds meant for Israel’s security to the Arab people in Gaza who have launched three wars against Israel since 2008. Sanders may be the only Jew among the leaders of the Democratic presidential pack, but he is without question the most critical of the Jewish State.

And it is not a coincidence that Sanders if the most left-wing of the presidential contenders. It is only through the narrow prism of a progressive worldview that J Street and Sanders can be viewed as “pro-Israel.”

For most people, being pro-“fill-in-the-blank” means actively supporting that entity. It may be with words of support and encouragement to that entity. Perhaps its with active lobbying for trade and aid on that entity’s behalf. Speaking about it positively and with enthusiasm to others.

However, for J Street, being “pro-Israel” simply means believing that Israel has a right to exist and should have secure borders. I believe that Costa Rica should exist and have secure borders, but I don’t think that makes me “pro-Costa Rica.” Maybe if I associated with people who hated Costa Rica, I would be considered pro-Costa Rica for an otherwise benign point of view, but not among most of the world.

Which is precisely the J Street dynamic.

Inside the echo chambers of the progressive halls, suggesting that Israel has a right to exist is considered extraordinary and extreme. Vocalizing that it is and should remain the Jewish homeland is considered vulgar. That it has a right to defend itself against terrorism is deemed shocking.

That’s the sad reality among J Street’s peers. Groups like the New Israel Fund actively support organizations which try to dismantle any Jewishness of the Jewish State and fund global tours for people to demonize the Israel Defense Forces. IfNotNow fights to undermine Jewish presence in Jerusalem. Code Pink supports a boycott of Israeli products. Jewish Voice for Peace has supported terrorists who have killed Israelis. And the Reform and Reconstructionist rabbis on the boards of these institutions question whether Israel should exist at all.

The progressive stances on Israel can be seen in the “Women’s March” whose leaders are against “humanizing” Israelis and in BackLivesMatter which has a platform which calls Israel an “apartheid state” and advocates for B.D.S. (boycott, divest and sanctions of Israel). These are appalling statements and opinions.

With such a peer group of progressives, it should not shock people that in that narrow “coastal liberal latte-sipping politically-correct out-of-touch folks” as Barack Obama once said, J Street actually believes that saying the Israel should exist as a secure Jewish State is considered “pro-Israel.” Outside of the far-left extreme, that’s an opinion which is considered neutral – “pareve” as they would say in the Jewish community.

Actually being “pro-Israel” for groups like AIPAC means ensuring bi-partisan support for Israel, keeping trade and military cooperation intact, advocating for U.S. support for Israeli positions at the United Nations. J Street is against all of those ideas.

One could perhaps argue that it is useful for J Street to engage with their co-progressives and get them to upgrade their views on Israel. It is clear that the “Squad” of socialists in congress are not going to listen to AIPAC or the Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC).

But it is horribly incorrect and out-of-bounds for the general public and media to quote J Street as the mainstream pro-Israel forum when it is nothing of the sort. It is merely the fringe “meh-Israel” segment of a radical leftist anti-Zionist ideology which is regrettably beginning to permeate the Democratic party.

On Accepting and Rejecting Donations

The head of the MIT Media Lab, Joichi Ito, was forced to resign when people learned that he accepted donations from Jeffrey Epstein after he had pleaded guilty to soliciting prostitution from a minor. Ito also resigned from several other boards in short order.
While institutions need donors’ money to exist and operate, they are becoming reluctant to be associated with certain types of individuals – in this case, taking money from someone who committed crimes against minors.
This is part of a growing trend of considering the source of donations, particularly among not-for-profit institutions.
Consider The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York which stated it will no longer accept donations from the Sackler family. While the Sacklers were not convicted of a crime, the Met felt that the owners of Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyCotin, were responsible for “the ensuing public health crisis surrounding the abuse of these medications.” While the proper use of the drug helped many, the abuse of the drug became an epidemic causing the Met to conclude that the association with the Sacklers was toxic to the image and values that it wanted to portray. The simplified math was the Sacklers equaled Purdue equaled OxyCotin equaled opioid overdoses and death which should never equal the Met. Goodbye Sackler dough.
In June 2019, the University of Alabama decided to return the largest donation in its history after the donor called for a boycott of the State of Alabama and the university for passing a very restrictive abortion law. The university said that it did so because of the donor’s “ongoing attempts to interfere in the operations of the Law School.
The cases above highlight institutions returning donations because the donor either tarnished the institution’s brand image or actually sought to harm operations.
Some politicians have similarly returned donations from people who are associated with “sinful” activities like e-cigarettes. Sometimes the action is spurred by activists demanding that an institution return donations from companies who profit from actions deemed harmful, like immigrant detention facilities or, on the opposite side of the coin, demand a donor recall a personal donation or risk a massive boycott of their businesses.
In short, cash donations are no longer considered neutral currency of exchange but a binding seal between giver and recipient.
So what is one to make of noted Israel-basher Linda Sarsour raising money for Jewish causes, like repairing vandalized Jewish cemeteries? Are her vile comments about Israel and activists like Ayaa Hirsi Ali as well as association with anti-Semite Louis Farrakhan reasons to reject her funds? Many Jewish groups want her to be banned from speaking at forums or even entering Canada, while others are content to take her funds and ignore her more evil inclinations.
Universities are typically the most likely to turn the cheek while they open their pockets.
The New York University and many other colleges take in millions of dollars from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, a country that openly executes minors as well as people who convert from Islam (apostasy), a fundamental human right. Yet no one batted an eyelash, until the Saudi government was accused of murdering a journalist. Suddenly, it became common knowledge that several U.S. universities had taken over $600 million from the Saudi government and Saudi companies. Those universities, not coincidentally, had become hotbeds for anti-Israel activity, including Columbia University, Tufts University, and the University of Southern California with each school receiving at least $1 million and George Washington University receiving $12 million in 2017. MIT received $78 million from the Saudis between 2011 and 2017.
Saudi Arabia’s funding of American universities paled compared to Qatar, which gave over $1 billion between 2011 and 2017. Qatar openly funds Hamas, a U.S. State Department designated foreign terrorist organization, and an openly anti-Semitic organization. No matter. Georgetown, Carnegie Mellon, and Northwestern established satellite campuses in the small country.
Curiously, there is virtually no public outcry about universities taking hundreds of millions of dollars from Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Without a protest, it is highly unlikely that these institutions of “higher learning” will do anything.
Consider the situation when Islamic antisemitism went into global overdrive in mid- 2000 just before the start of the Second Intifada, pushing money and narratives of Jews and Israel as enemies of the entire world, most notably manifest in the 2001 Durban Conference about Racism. In July 2000, the president of the United Arab Emirates, Sheik Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan, donated $2.5 million to the Harvard Divinity School to endow the Sheik Zayed Al Nahyan Professorship in Islamic Religious Studies. Within a short period of time, the Zayed Center became a noxious fountain of anti-Semitic screed complete with Holocaust denials and blood libels. It took the non-profit group The David Project and a student at the Harvard Divinity School, Rachel Fish, to loudly protest the donation and Center itself. Harvard did nothing for years, but ultimately returned the gift in July 2004, but not before hosting speakers like former president Jimmy Carter and former Vice President Al Gore.

Jeffrey Epstein and Sheik Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan: too hot to handle
For the most part, Qatar and Saudi Arabia’s funding of terrorism and anti-Semitism has not irked the American public. Organizations only started to return funds to Saudi Arabia – like the Endeavor talent agency – after the murder of the journalist in October 2018. It would appear that the well-being of journalists ranks much higher than of children or Jews.
The dirty money does not only go towards research or new Islamic study departments at American universities. Oftentimes the money is for paying for scholarships to send tens of thousands of Muslim students into American campuses.
In the 2017/18 school year, Saudi Arabia had over 44,000 students studying in American universities – the fourth largest total in the world and as much as every country in South America COMBINED (a population 13 times as large). That total was actually down from the 2016/17 school year when there were over 52,000 Saudi students, and lower then the incredible 61,287 in 2015/16 – an astounding one Saudi student in the United States for every 537 people from that country. To give that figure context, that’s the equivalent of 610,000 American students studying in a single country, while the actual number of US students studying abroad, all over the world, was 330,000.
The enormous number of students coming from Saudi Arabia was the part of the Obama Administration’s outreach to the Muslim Middle East. The United States permitted greater numbers of students from Muslim countries than anywhere else in the world. That policy reversed course under the Trump Administration, as seen in the table below showing the annual change in the number of foreign students in the U.S.

NYU, Harvard, Columbia, MIT and many other universities have been taking hundreds of millions of dollars and tens of thousands of students from corrupt Islamic regimes who finance terror and spur antisemitism. As many American institutions have begun to return tainted money from the likes of the Sacklers and Jeffrey Epstein, it is similarly time to send the money and students back to their point of origin.

Omar and Tlaib’s Antisemitic B.D.S.

Two members of congress, Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) were denied entry into Israel in August 2019 because of their work advocating for an economic war against Israel, called B.D.S. for boycott, divest and sanction. The two contend that their motives are noble in that they just seek to exercise their freedom of expression and speech to pressure Israel to improve the rights of Palestinian Arabs. In response to being rejected by Israel, they are now seeking to cut U.S. economic aid to Israel. It seems that haters of Israel can always find an excuse for B.D.S., including hurt pride.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib and Rep. Ilhan Omar hold press conference on the ban preventing them from traveling to Israel, Aug. 18, 2019, in St Paul, Minn.

These two congresspeople have been openly hostile to Israel for many years. The question being discussed is whether these two women and the B.D.S. movement are really about real or perceived actions of Israel OR pure antisemitism.

The Sole Jewish State.
There is only one Jewish state, a situation very dissimilar to the dozens of Christian and Muslim countries. Boycotting Israel is therefore an attack on every Jewish state. One could perhaps not be so cynical about the two Muslim women’s motives if they were targeting only one out of ten Jewish states, similar to President Trump’s temporary travel ban on 10% of the Muslim-majority countries because of their poor security controls. But these same women gave no allowance to Trump and said he was singling denying entry to Muslims in a “hateful” assault. So, one can draw a conclusion that these women are driven by their own “hateful” ideology, persecuting 100% of the Jewish countries, not just 10 percent of them.

Relying on Prior Comments
Omar had no compunction calling out Trump’s travel ban because of the prior comments he had made about Muslims and Islam. Yet she cannot understand people viewing her attacks on Israel through the prism of her repeated negative comments about Jews. She says that “Islamophobia and antisemitism are two sides of the same bigoted coin,” but the reality is people see her and Trump as two similar bigoted talking heads.

Outrageous Claims
The B.D.S. movement which Tlaib proudly supports, makes wildly false and inflammatory claims about Israel. It openly uses terms like “apartheid,” “settler colonialism” and “ethnic cleansing” in vile libels which not only have no basis in fact, but are incendiary comments designed to rile up people to actively attack the Jewish state.

  • Israel Welcomes non-Jews While the Muslim Countries Practice Antisemitism
The “ethnic cleansing” attack on Israel is an inversion of facts. At Israel’s founding it welcomed 160,000 non-Jews as citizens, while at the same time, Jordan expelled every Jew from the land it seized from Israel and specifically denied any Jew citizenship. Fellow Arab and Muslim countries followed suit and evicted one million Jews between the 1930’s and 1960’s. Today, there are 100 times the number of Arabs living inside Israel as there are Jews living in Arab and Muslim countries. Arabs in Israel are thriving. where their numbers are growing faster than the organic population of any neighboring Arab country.
  • Israeli Arabs like the Jewish State
When Israel passed its Nation-State Law, many supporters of the B.D.S. movement claimed that it showed Israel to be a racist country. However, they ignored the polls which showed that Israeli Arabs overwhelmingly support the law, even more than Israeli Jews!
  • Israel is more tolerant of Muslims than Europe
Israel permits people to wear hijabs and burqas, to build churches, mosques and minarets, to have halal food, perform circumcisions and use Sharia courts. Those are freedoms you cannot find in France, Denmark, Norway, Ireland, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Latvia or Turkey, to name a few countries.
  • Israel is the most liberal country in MENA
The simple fact is that Israel is an open liberal democracy, with rights and protections for all people. There are Arabs in the Israeli parliament, the Supreme Court and the army. Muslims are allowed to pray at Judaism’s holiest site and can become the prime minister in the country. Those liberties are in sharp contrast to its Arab Muslim neighbors.
  • Israel is the Reestablishment of Jewish Sovereignty
The B.D.S. claim of “colonialism” is not just a lie but antisemitic. It deliberately erases the 3,300 years of Jewish history in the land and ignores Judaism’s focus of prayer and pilgrimage to Jerusalem for millenia. It is a part of a new type of repulsive “replacement theology” in which Arabs have transformed themselves into the indigenous people in the holy land and Jews are recent invaders.

B.D.S.’s Goal is the Destruction of Israel
The founder of the B.D.S. movement, Omar Barghouti, states very clearly that his movement seeks to end the Jewish State in any configuration or size, “most definitely we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine.” Even long-time critic of Israel Norman Finkelstein said that the supporters of B.D.S. “don’t want Israel [to exist].”

B.D.S. Tactics are Attacks, not Protests
The tactics deployed by the B.D.S. movement are through economic and cultural warfare. Omar and Tlaib saying that they are just expressing their opinions is a far cry from reality. The movement wants universities, companies and countries to stop investing in Israel, from conducting any commerce, collaboration or trade, and to sanction it often and repeatedly. A small country like Israel would be crippled without its export/import industry.

Democratic Socialists Embrace B.D.S.
Tlaib and Omar have common cause with the far-left wing of the Democratic Party, Congressperson Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders’ Democratic Socialists which have also embraced B.D.S. In doing so, they are mainstreaming the falsehoods and vilification of Israel and advancing an economic war against the Jewish State.

Pressuring Only the Jewish State in the Dispute
The two members of Congress and the B.D.S. movement claim they are seeking a peaceful settlement to the Israeli-Arab conflict, but are only attacking one party, not attempting to bring them together.

  • Nominally about a Dispute or a Civil War
The Arabs have been fighting with the Jews over the control of the land for 100 years in a long-simmering civil war. It has still not ended as neither side has claimed victory nor defeat, leaving millions of Arabs stateless. Progressive empathy is naturally drawn to the weaker party, without consideration of who is actually right or whether the fault of the terrible situation lies at the leadership of the weaker party. The alt-left and Muslim extremists either ignore or celebrate the acting-president of the Palestinian Authority (PA), Mahmoud Abbas calling for millions of fighters to descend on Jerusalem (1:03) and the Hamas Charter which calls for the killing of Jews and refusing to ever negotiate a peace with Israel.
  • Palestinians Have No Ability to Negotiate
The leader of the PA’s four-year term in office ran out over a decade ago. He has no mandate to negotiate, and polls show that the Palestinians want him to resign. He also does not control Gaza, and has not been able to govern a Palestinian parliament which has 58% of the members belonging to Hamas, a U.S. designated terrorist organization. Abbas has never shown a compromise in his negotiations with Israel and has never been able to control Hamas. Therefore, there is no logic for Israel to negotiate with a straw man who cannot deliver, and it is unfair to punish Israel for failing to reach an agreement with such counter-party.

Omar and Tlaib Refuse Visit to Israel and Schedule Visit to “Palestine”
Over forty Democratic members of Congress went to Israel in the beginning of August and met with Israelis and Palestinian Arabs in a well organized trip. But Omar and Tlaib boycotted the trip and instead decided to go on a trip to the State of “Palestine,” even though the United States does not recognize such a country. Their agenda was organized by Miftah, a group which has excused the killing of Israeli civilians.

The B.D.S. movement is dedicated to the destruction of the Jewish State and the nullification of Jewish history and Jewish rights, which is why the Israeli government banned entry for people affiliated with the movement. It is manifestation of Palestineism which believes the dignity of Palestinians is predicated on erasing the dignity of Jews. Omar and Tlaib are its current ugly face, but it’s in the hearts and minds of other Democratic Socialists.
